The first and strongest two-way relationship shown in the novel was between Lennie and George, who share each other’s talents and abilities to fulfil each other’s needs. Sula and Nel’s friendship is a central component in the plot and conflict of Sula. Toni Morrison includes a short passage from pages fifty-one to fifty-two to explain the depth of this friendship. Through the use of imagery this passage shows that the girls became close because of their similarities and because the girls found desirable qualities in the others differences. These girls had many similarities on the surface. Both were only children who were described to have “distance mothers and incomprehensible fathers” (Morrison 52) in this section.…

It shows the struggles most middle schoolers go through, except these girls shop everyday at high fashion, expensive stores or go to social events with celebrities. Showing the struggles of power between friends and outsiders. And the struggles of trying to deal with parents.…

We can continue on for a longer period of time to get more in-depth on the origin of gender inequality in religion, but let us go onto the focus of the 19th century. British literature displays the opinion of marriage, and that opinion isn’t the highest of standards. Katherine Phillips shows such in her poem “Friendship”. Phillips begins by defining love, explaining how love is in nature and in the heavens, which flows off into the earth (Line 5-13). Then, she explains how love is a misconception on earth, due to her low opinion of marriage (Line 29-34), and that true love is shown through friendship.…

Many friendships throughout the novel are explored, with the central character within them being Stephen. He forms a bond with Keith Hayward along with the one between Barbara Berrill, something that proves to be hard for the protagonist. Frayn structures the novel in short and large chapters to show that his childhood, when compared to the present day, was far more momentous. Frayn presents hostility entering the one sided friendship between Stephen and Keith through the use of different paralinguistic and prosodic features which contradicts that they are friends who play together.…

Regarding education and friendship, significant learning is not able to develop without meaningful relationships. This idea is prevalent in Rules, a novel by Cynthia Lord. Rules tells the story of twelve-year-old Catherine and her struggle to find a balance between caring for her brother David, who has autism, and discovering her place in life. Preteen Catherine yearns for a “normal” life; one that doesn’t include frequently babysitting her brother and one not worrying about other people’s judgments of her family. Rules prove to be important in her family, as shown by Catherine, as she creates a set of rules for her brother that exceed the average house rules, such as “no taking off your pants.”…
