Decent Essays
In late 1941 a doctor named Sigmund Rascher started an experiment he called “Freezing Hypothermia”. These experiments were conducted on men to stimulate their senses so they could adapt to the conditions that the armies had suffered on their Eastern Front. These experiments were mostly done in concentration camps, including Birkenau, Dachau, and the famous Auschwitz. This experiment was divided into two parts. The first part was to evaluate how long it took to lower the body temperature causing death. There were two ways of doing so. One was to strap them down on a table completely naked, and rolled outside in below zero temperatures. This was very ineffective, therefore, causing many people to die. That it was for research purposes and that some of the experiments did have data that was worth the loss of the lives. In one interview with a surgeon from the Unit, he said, “Unit 731 proved scientifically that the best treatment for frostbite was not rubbing he limb, which had been the traditional method, but rather immersion in water a bit warmer that 100 degrees--but never more than 122 degrees” (NYT). It is believed that the experimentations of Unit 731 were indeed right because there was data that was useful in a way. That at least the prisoners didn’t die in vain. Also, in an interview, a surgeon from Unit 731 decided to share his feelings, and he said,‘“There’s a possibility this could happen again because in war, you have to win”’…
