Freeman Hrabowski

Is college actually preparing students or are students wasting their time attending college? Freeman Hrabowski, the president of University of Maryland wrote an article “Colleges Prepare People for Life.” Most people think that college is a waste of time. On the other hand, some disagree and believe that college can be beneficial. A college student is mostly independent and they have to make their own decisions. In the beginning of this article Hrabowski make it seem like college is too expensive and no one should attend. Hrabowski’s argument on the pros and cons of college is effective. Accordingly, Hrabowski felt that students fail to realize the importance of college. He took both sides of his argument into consideration which established his credibility, personal and background evidence, and he said things to appeal to his readers’ emotions. Hrabowski says to his readers, “I’m reminded of that each day when I walk past a statue of the late Walter Sondheim that stands in the heart of our campus and reminds us of the power of education each day” (692). This statue of Sondheim reminds him how Sondheim did not have a clue of what else to with his life after he had found a job. However, the things Sondheim learned in college such as liberal arts gave him an idea. This idea allowed him to think bigger and broadly. Hrabowski feels this statue should motivate, encourage, and should have an emotional attach to some students. He is certain this statue of Sondheim is a heart of their campus, and it is very inspirational once a student learns the story of Walter Sondheim and how he became a civic leader only by attending college. Hrabowski wrote about the statue and the history of it to appeal to his readers’ emotions, which will encourage them and give them the passion to attend
