There isn’t really any gang violence in Findlay Ohio but drive forty-five minutes away to Toledo and there is plenty of it. There was a scene in the movie where Eva’s father was arrested even though he did nothing wrong. There have been many cases where the police will arrest people even though they did nothing wrong. The unfairness of these events have started massive race riots. These events have led to groups such as Black Lives Matter. Their goal has been to create equality among the races, something that we have still been striving for since the segregation era. Even though Liberty-Benton is not an inner city school, there are still cliques that go on. There are your populars, nerds, music geeks, and many more. While there is not really any violence that goes on between these factions there are still harsh words thrown at each other. The groups do not get along and tend to stay to their own friends. STRIDES is something that tries to fight this, but from experience it does not work. It is very hard to get people to get along that do not have anything in common, or frankly just do not care about making new friends. While everyone matures through high school and the hostility seems to calm down, the cliques still remain and probably will until graduation. Freedom Writers is a movie about students who struggle with gang violence and teacher's efforts to better her students’ lives. The movie deals with the struggles of inner city students. Every time they walk out of their door they know their life could be in danger thanks to gang violence. The movie tries showing that a way to battle the violence is through education and learning. Mrs. Gruwell is able to help her students better their lives by getting them interested in school. Freedom Writers allows people who haven’t experienced these issues to really see what is going on outside their
