The youthful generation’s minds fluctuate with the ideas of success and achievement. Many find themselves in difficult situations that hinder them from believing that success can be found in the palm of their hands. The movie, Freedom Writers, provides an inspiration view into the lives of troubled high school students fighting for success and for survival. The motivational movie should be presented as part of the curriculum of Slippery Rock’s Critical Writing course. The film exhibits ideas of just morals, success, equality, trust, respect, racism, segregation and judgment. I believe this movie will provide students with a better understanding of the effectiveness of personal perseverance. Not only will this film appeal to the students of Slippery Rock, but a teacher can gain some insightful information into the minds of the students. As a teacher of the Critical Writing course, the movie will shed light onto some new teaching methods that are useful for gaining knowledge into the minds of the students. Mrs. Gruwell utilizes the assignment of having her students write in a daily journal to learn about their lives, fears, thoughts, and personal journeys (Freedom Writers). This action helps her understand the struggles her pupils face on an everyday basis. The journal assignment draws a line of trust between Erin and her students. The movie clearly portrays that a teacher-student relationship is an important aspect of the learning process. Fellow teachers should take interest in this movie because it exhibits how a teacher’s devotion and determination transformed a class of insensible students into a hardworking, diligent class.
