The movie focused more on adding more dramatic effect to make it more interesting to watch. I feel like the stories themselves the way the students told them would have been dramatic enough. For example, the story of Eva in the movie her relationship with her father takes up most of her story line and adds a more dramatic side of events. In the book, Eva diary never brings up her talking with her father in prison about protecting her own. In her diary she writes about her guilt for putting another innocent man in jail was too much for her and that's why she tells her truth and goes against her own blood. The movie does a good during this scene because it gives more context into what the courtroom looked like and it makes you feel all the tension she felt in that room. In the movie they go further in Eva story showing the aftermath of her decision in the courtroom, showing how her people turn on her and mark her as dead to them. This adds a more dramatic feel in the movie showing how bad it was to turn against your own blood. The extra scenes not mention in her diary in some ways can add more detail to the diaries but I feel like they spent too much time doing this and should have used the time to show other stories within the diaries. Something the movie did get right was the beginning scene where Eva was waiting for the bus and her cousin was shot right in front of
