Freedom: Soldiers, The Flag, And Our Country

Decent Essays
When you think of freedom, what comes to mind? I know that when I think about freedom I think about the soldiers, the Flag, and our country. Our Soldiers do more for us then we think, they leave their loved ones to fight for our country. You should think more about what they do for us. Just a simple card to say “Thank You for your service” or just a small gift to show them how much you appreciate them. Flags of Our Fathers depicts the lives of six servicemen beginning in their hometowns and ending with their deaths, three of which died in battle. The story follows the second flag raisers of Mount Suribachi, some of which were not even in the photo, but were made famous by a photograph taken of their backs as they stood the American Flag upright. In this book, James Bradley, the son of a flag raiser, defines a hero, identifies the exploitation of Ira Hayes, and documents difficulties they faced upon returning. In this story, Bradley mentions how the media took a photo of service men replacing a flag as a glorious display of American dominance in the war. Following the picture being taken, the men deemed “heroes” were sent to tour the United States campaigning for the sale of bonds as the U.S. only had a month’s worth of funding prior to the battle of Iwo Jima.…

Have you ever wondered what would have happened if the allied forces during the WWII had been just a little bit less patriotic? Owing to this sacrifice of millions and millions of people the world has been given an opportunity to lean from its faults and defeat fascism. The thought of a life without freedom is unimaginable to most Americans. Each day, we live our lives, with shallow complaints, taking for granted the simple freedoms that we enjoy. It isn’t often that we reflect on how we came to enjoy our freedom of choice, and it most certainly takes a tragic event to awaken our awareness of those who place their time, efforts, and lives at risk to ensure our existence as we know it to be. Events such as September 11, awaken us long enough to bond and appreciate, yet somehow, we seem to drift back to our everyday lives, forgetting the lesson we claimed to have learned. Our veterans, those who once held the key to continued freedom, deserve our appreciation , respect, and support, for without them, we would not be where we are today.…
