One night Jesse overheard his mother crying and walked into her bedroom. She had just found out Lisa was pregnant and what kind of things she had been doing. Watching his mom in such pain and disappointment Jesse kissed her on the cheek expressing that he had also caused her several problems, and for that he was sorry. Glued to a breaking story about seven African American men and six white activists now known as Freedom Riders, on May 4, 1961, the Freedom Riders left Washington, DC, and traveled through the extremely segregated Deep South on a mission to test Boynton Virginia. Jessie followed the story as it unfolded on national television and in the newspapers. The reports were that on May 14, the Freedom Riders in two segregated groups were attacked outside Birmingham, Alabama and Anniston, Alabama. The headline read that a mob of Klansman had thrown a firebomb into the Anniston bus. While in Birmingham, the report was that members of the Ku Klux Klan after making earlier arrangements with local law enforcement to have 15 minutes alone with the bus. As The Cold War continued to worsen, The Russians had placed Ballistic Missiles on Cuban land, just 90 miles from the coast of Florida. The Cubans believed Kennedy was going to try to invade their country again; they had already attacked the Cubans in failed attempts.
