Freedom Of Speech In Football Stadiums

Decent Essays
I and like many people think freedom of speech is important. The arguments and debates that come with freedom of speech boil down to people caring enough about a topic to have a dispute over it or strengthen it in a way by hearing the opping sides argument. Now regarding on where freedom of speech should be I think it should be on college campuses and not in football stadiums. Reason being for this is that a college campus is a place to learn and there is bound to be people there with different opinions and they can grow there as they learn about all these different perspectives. A football stadium and NFL players shouldn't have and open freedom of speech or mostly the players due to the fact that they are at their job, they are being paid

NFL Protest The most recent major sports league uproar has been the protests during our National Anthem. NFL players across every team have been kneeling, linking arms, or even just staying in the locker room. President Donald Trump spoke out about the situation on Twitter saying that the players should be suspended or fired for “disrespecting” our country. One of the points made by Trump was his approval of the players that were locking arms and complete disappointment by those who chose to kneel or stay in the locker room. I personally believe that it is your choice to kneel, lock arms, or stay in the locker room.…

Freedom of speech has been an integral part of American society ever since the founding fathers gathered in Philadelphia to create the nation’s fundamental laws. The first amendment of the Constitution guarantees every American citizen the right to freedom of speech. In recent years, questions have arisen about whether free speech should be regulated, specifically on college campuses. Are college students too sensitive to handle issues brought up in free debate? Two articles that address this issue are “Millennials Will Soon Define ‘America,’ and That’s a Problem for Ideas” by Julie Lythcott-Haims and “Today’s Students Have a New Way of Looking at Free Speech” by Kathleen McCartney.…

On August 14th 2016, NFL player Colin Kaepernick began the protest of police brutality against black Americans by sitting during the national anthem. Colin Kaepernick announced to the public why he was not standing during the anthem during a press conference “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people, and people of color.” On August 12th 2017, the protests started back up when Marshawn Lynch sits for the anthem during the preseason. After Lynch protests, more protests and on September 24th the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers all stayed in their locker rooms. Civil disobedience is very important in getting your point across when doing a protest. If you want people to listen to you and consider your opinion, you must be respectful while still letting people know that you are not okay with a certain concept. For example, in “Civil Disobedience,” Thoreau states “Let every man make known what kind of government would command his respect.” In other words, let your opinion be known, but be respectful. This is similar to what is going on in the NFL today, but the players are being looked at as disrespectful in some people's eyes.…

Protesting is one of our rights, but is it right to do it how the NFL players have been doing it? I believe that everyone should stand for the pledge as everyone who fought for our country. They do have the right to protest but taking a knee during the National Anthem is very disrespectful. Taking a knee during the anthem is very rude. Many soldiers who fought for our freedom and their lives stand for it but why can’t NFL players.…

Freedom of speech is a privilege all Americans share. A person can state whatever they please, so long as it doesn’t cause a clear and present danger, without government interference. The idea that someone can legally think, be, and say whatever they want is what lead millions of immigrants to form the U.S. back in 1776 and is the same reason people fight for their right to live here today. Thanks to information being so accessible in this digital age, individuals are told that they are allowed and to study and form an educated opinion. This comes with one catch.…

The right to having free speech is one of the basic human rights that pretty much everybody knows firsthand. Some people abuse this right, and some use it just right! Freedom of expression is super important because it enables the public to participate in the decision making spectrum of society with free range of information and ideas. Without this, people would be unable to make informed decisions, and things would be complete and utter chaos. The framers of the United States Constitution probably thought that through, which is why we even have the first amendment freedom of speech.…

To me both freedom of speech and academic freedom serve the same purpose and necessity, especially on a college campus. If institutions of higher learning are allowed to infringe on the expressed rights of students, faculty, and staff as a nation it is my belief that we have lost all hope in our government, and in the laws that are implemented to serve and protect us. The Bill of Rights was implemented to protect society, institutions of higher learning were also implemented to protect society, if one disregards the other it will be a systemic failure that we will all…
