Christianity was prevalent in all of American society. One aspect Christianity has changed in America is in public schools. In 1962, in Engel v. Vitale, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against state-sponsored prayer in schools. Soon Americans noted that it was unconstitutional to have public schools have school sponsored prayers. Since Americans believe in a wide variety of beliefs, it was decided that it was not appropriate for the government to endorse any one specific belief system. They noted that wars, and persecutions, often occurred in the past when the government involved itself in religious affairs.
Many people have called the United States a Christian nation, and while this is true in the sense that the majority of Americans are Christians, our government has no official religion, and advocates the separation of it in its government.
