People in our modern world usually think of freedom as the ability to do what you want and to be treated as an equal to other people. In other words, these people are strong believers that everyone has free will. Not only to do what we want, but to be able to think and speak what we feel as well, without limitation. During the 1940s and 1950s Communism was an issue that was spreading from Eastern countries causing Americans to be fearful of its encroachment onto US soil. With the Soviet Union gaining more power the possibility of contention, or worse, was a disquieting actuality for many Americans. After China was taken ahold of by a Communist leader and when Western Europe seemed ready to become predominantly Communist, US citizens began to feel that Communism had the potential to envelope them. This internal unrest helped pave the way for Senator Joseph McCarthy to take advantage of the situation and claim that the State Department “was full of treasonous pro-Soviet intellectuals” (1). The subsequent McCarthy trials essentially paralleled the Salem trials that took place nearly two and a half centuries prior.…

Freedom is viewed very differently by the different philosophers. One may see it as absolute freedom where there is no government control over its citizens. While another can be partial freedom when the government lays out fair and equal laws that the citizens need to abide. Then there is no freedom where the laws and regulations that the government lays out interferes with the daily lives of the citizens. In the world, today you can see what the French philosophers’ Montesquieu, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire had considered freedom and how it ended up.…

Freedom is something so simple, yet it is fought over and has to be demanded. For example America took African American’s freedom by enslaving them, and even when the slaves were freed they weren’t treated fairly from this statement, “But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination” (King 46).
