Once people have been cut off from freedom, they begin to give up things such as safety and possessions to try to regain that once obtainable self independence. The narrator from this novel explains certain events that portray rebellion against the abuse of power. Chief remembered the first time he met McMurphy, “but then's when I remember thinking that he was laughing because he wasn't fooled for one minute by my dear-and-dumb act…” (pg.24) Chief pretended to be deaf and dumb when in reality, all he was trying to do was gain a little more freedom. By pretending to be someone else, big nurse and the black boys would not manage to take absolute …show more content…
McMurphy, further on in the novel, was discussing escape with the patients and the decided that they needed something heavy enough to break through the window. He said, “What would be wrong with using this panel? It don’t look nailed down’… ‘Goddammit, i sure as hell did that much, now didn't I?” (pg. ) Mcmurphy shows the most simple and common way of trying to gain freedom; escape. He was willing to sacrifice his safety to try to escape, and tried to show the others that the least they could do is try. His actions then inspired Chiefs escape at the end of the book. McMurphy inspired the others to try anything they could, even if they thought nothing would work. He has also been breaking the rules, and once he was caught he says, “Tough luck -and peels three banana’s right under the black boy’s nose and eats one after the other…” (pg. 103) This patient had another desperate attempt to grasp freedom by disobeying most of the rules placed by Nurse Ratched. When every patient is given strict rules, they are not allowed to be themselves and forced in this case to lose their own mind and personality. Mcmurphy tried to break these rules as a form of rebellion and as a way to gain control over his actions, all the while sacrificing safety and his new found life. Everyone who has felt the struggle of confinement, will be lead to the position of sacrifice for the reward of

There is human behavior in William Golding’s (1954,1999) lord of the flies and in Ken Kesey's (1962) One flew over the cuckoo's nest. Human behavior can be acted in different ways. In Ken Kesey's quote “The rabbits accept their role in the ritual and recognize the wolf is the strong,” (Kelsey 1962) the author describes human behavior as in that person who is bigger and stronger tend to mess with the weaker and little people such as in William Golding quote “Henry was a bit of a leader this afternoon, because the other two were Percival and Johnny, the smallest boys on the island.…

Throughout this long, arduous year, we have read a myriad of literature pieces, especially those among the topic of America and its history. Many were about touchy subjects and wrote of the struggles of those in the past, books that touched hearts and drew the reader to notice what hardships many have had to pull through. Although it seems to me that some may disagree with this opinion, for me, the book that I gravitated to and enjoyed the most was One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. I believe this was mostly due to my interest in the main actor, McMurphy, a man who threw caution and care of backlash to the wind and focused his life on making it entertaining. I seem to be drawn to characters like this who care little about the mold of what is…

Showing his persona, McMurphy treats the patients like real people, unlike Ratched, who handles the patients similarly to prisoners. In fact, he discloses that he feels, “You boys don’t look so crazy to me.” (19) In addition, through the eyes of the Chief, McMurphy shook his hand and seemingly transferred power to Bromden in a hallucination, “I remember the fingers were thick and strong closing over mine, and my hand commenced to feel peculiar and went to swelling up out there on the stick of my arm, like he was transmitting his own blood into it. It rang with blood and power.”…

“Freeing yourself was one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self was another.” Freedom is the state of being free or at liberty, rather than in confinement or under physical restraint. Since birth, we learn to adapt into a life of restrictions and limitations. Although some countries are considered to be ‘free’, we are still bound by the oppressive chains of society and government. We follow the rules and if we choose to be disobedient we suffer the consequences.…

She intends, literally, to make it a struggle to the death. McMurphy dominates the ward, and even when he tries to conform after he learns that his dismissal will only be at the Big Nurse’s approval, the patients are no longer willing to accept the authority as status quo. When McMurphy realizes that the plight of his fellow patients is more important than his own escape of this institution, he sets about to bolster their own manhood and self confidence to make them able to regain lives in society again. In this contribution to make others successful, the term “madness” becomes more ridiculous as an adjective assigned to McMurphy’s nature. While some may view McMurphy as insane or suffering from “madness” in the process he uses to heal the other patients, he is only giving them something to…

McMurphy was required to participate in group talk therapy as one form of treatment for his mental/social illness. However, one can only question the effectiveness of this when the group was extremely dysfunctional as was the therapist or nurse conducting the sessions. Instead, it was obvious they were designed to instigate further fear and intimidation, and a sense of self- doubt. The other treatment protocol was pharmaceutical and this was evident in large doses, with pills of some form or another being dispensed regularly throughout the film. It was, in fact, an important part of the movie’s message, which aimed to explain that hospitals have turned to drug therapy as a form of treatment to dull the underlying problems.…
