Freedom From Wants Norman Rockwell Analysis

With Thanksgiving only a few days away, I could not help but choose to analyze and interpret Norman Rockwell’s painting Freedom From Want, also known as The Thanksgiving Picture. It is Thanksgiving day and in the top center of the painting, the grandparents have a large turkey that they are going to carve. On the long dining table, there is also celery, a casserole dish, and other small side items. There is a large window behind the grandparents with a white curtain, letting in a lot of light. All around the table, relatives of all ages are gathered and seated, ready to eat with their family. They are all laughing and talking to each other, probably catching up with one another. The table is white, the plates are white, and everyone is drinking …show more content…
When you first look at this painting, your eyes go directly to the turkey, The turkey stands out because while the rest of the painting is white or blue, the turkey is a dark brown. The turkey also stands out because it is overwhelmingly large compared to the other dishes portrayed in the painting. Another visual element showcased in this piece would be lines, more specifically, implied lines. Once we look at the turkey, our eyes are also drawn to the people sitting around the table. First, you look at the little kid who is sitting to the left of his grandfather, and if you follow his line of vision, you next look at the man sitting closest to the bottom left of the picture. If you were to follow each person’s line of vision, you would never stop looking at the family that was seated at the dinner table. Not to mention, you also have the man on the bottom right of the painting looking outwards. Rockwell did an amazing job by engaging your imagination. Not only are we entertained by what is going on in the painting, but we are also thinking about what kind of Thanksgiving chaos could be happening on the outside of this …show more content…
Balance is achieved when there is an even distribution of weight throughout an artwork. When you look at this painting, there is not more weight on one side than on the other. There are the same number of guests on each side of the dinner table, so that is balanced. Also, if you look at the table setting itself, there is not a lot of food on either side. The food is evenly distributed on the table, therefore even the dinner placement is balanced. The other principle of design in this painting would be emphasis, which is when the artist wants the audience to focus on one aspect. This can be achieved by making a contrast of some sort. In this case, the contrast was between light and dark colors. In this painting, the table is white, the plates are white, the curtain is white, so you cannot help looking at the family members and the turkey, because they are such darker colors. Also, the greatness of the turkey is offset by the lack of food elsewhere in the picture, and also by the fact that water is the only drink being

The Indians were looking for peace while the whites were looking for their precious land that could potentially bring them wealth. The balance of the image is interesting to me. It’s almost a mirrored image with the way the birds are placed. If you spin the image upside down you can see practically the same image. I fine the detail in this image to be what really stands out to me. The colors and texture of the birds are what really makes the painting look so…

Color: The painting has a combination of complimentary colors that give the piece a warm look. For instance, the yellow and orange provides light to the composition and also add a visual depth to it because both colors reflect the scheme of a peaceful night. In addition, the blue in the sky beautifully portrays harmony throughout the painting, and the black in the background perfectly contrasts with the blue in the sky and the circled white brush strokes…

This painting shows me that Native American men are hard workers. Also, it shows me that men are expected to do certain tasks like fishing to provide for the village. I can assume the fish are for the village because the men have more fish in their canoe than they would need to feed themselves. As such, I can assume that fish is a staple in Native American’s diet because they are a plentiful resource. It also shows me that Native Americans are resourceful as they made a canoe from a tree and tools like the nets and spears from other raw materials found in the area around them.…

The artist used monochromatic colors as well as complementary colors to create some contrast and to bring overall harmony to the image. Another example is the use of implied lines that lead to the focal point. The focal point/emphasis is also another principle of design that brings harmony to the image. And the last example is the use of implied depth. All of these elements incorporated together to give the audience a feeling of unity and balance.…

They are too small beyond recognition, so viewers can just make out a figure. Some artworks that impressionists in the 19th century created share some commonalities with this painting. Impressionists depicted the nature with phenomenology excluding political, social, historical thought. They just focused on nature itself, so people are usually cropped or are represented by blurry silhouettes. The big difference from impressionism and the distinct feature of this painting is that what the artist wants to deliver is small philosophy, which is harmony between humanity and nature.…

In the painting, Christ is illuminated by being colored in with very pale colors, but he surrounded by a myriad of colors. Each person depicted in the painting, especially those in the foreground, are each wearing clothes that have different hues, such as the Virgin is wearing blue while the Saint John is wearing red. The colors of each of their clothing are quite intense adding to the energy of the scene. There is also a mix of warm and cool tones throughout the painting, which adds the disorder of the painting. Another important aspect of the painting is the use of color in the middle ground and background.…

His shirt is a forest green and navy blue plaid patterned long sleeve flannel. From looking at the painting it is clear to see that the man is seated at a table with his elbows rested on the surface. His two frail hands are folded together and pressed against his forehead, as if he is bowing his head in prayer. Placed on the table in front of him is a loaf of bread with one end cut off, a bowl containing liquid of brown color, a knife which is right next to the bowl, a thick bible with a green cover, and laying on top of the bible is a pair of glasses folded, laying upside down. The wall beside the man is a brown color with light reflecting on it.…

Although many elements exist in this artwork, these elements are clearly the most significant. The colors displayed in this work are important because of the low intensity quality it provides. This is an altarpiece, placed behind the altar table where people kneel to pray. The artist utilizes several shades of gray and brown, which provides a certain serenity. There is also some shades of red and orange which offers balance and counteracts a dismal appearance.…

Not being able to see through the painting shows opaqueness and knowing this about the painting is very important to understand the meaning of it. The painting also has layers to it. The closest layer seems to be the clouds on the bottom so that is the first layer. Also, the clouds on the first layers are bright and obvious while the third layers clouds are dark and gloomy. The second layer or middle layer is Thetis and Jupiter with the eagle on the side and this is the most important layer.…

Also, the mixture of warm colors on top combined with primary and secondary colors give the painting a delicate effect particularly the three green brush strokes as it adds even more mystery to the painting. Furthermore, the diagonal lines that shape the floor and the barriers of the bridge and the curved lines on the water make a combination of energy and endlessness at the same time because the side of where the scared looking person is, looks completely different from where the water, which is what perhaps reflects the degree of anxiety that the scared looking person was suffering in that particular…
