Pros And Cons Of Dress Codes In School

CHANGES TO THE SCHOOL In any school there are many problems that the students see and believe need to be fixed. One of those major problems that every school deals with is dress code. What should be allowed? What should be banned? It’s really quite complicated when you think about it. There are several possible ways to solve this problem, but three main ideas that were considered in my group were as follows: Freedom Friday, Full Uniforms, and Multiple Uniforms. Each option was equally alluring as they all had their pros and cons, but we decided to pick, out of the three we came up with, Freedom Friday. Freedom Friday was chosen because it gave the students the most amount of freedom while still allowing the school to take command and keep …show more content…
We needed to look at what the students would want, what the teachers would deem appropriate, what it would be ok to limit, and what would be going too far on limiting the students free will and expression of self. Keeping all this in mind, three ideas were thought up to choose from. All of them have their own pros and cons, all of them revolving around the use of a school uniform. The three choices that were the most promising were Freedom Friday, Full Uniforms, and Multiple Uniforms. Freedom Friday, where students are required to wear their school provided uniforms for each school day of the week excluding Friday, where they are given a choice on what they want to wear, as long as it’s appropriately inside the school presented restrictions. This choice seemed the most promising as it gives the school loved uniform, while also providing a day for the students to wear whatever they want as long as it’s school appropriate. The small bad side to this choice was that the students would only be given one day to express themselves during the school week. The second solution that was considered is Full Uniforms, where the students are required to wear school provided uniforms on each and every school day, following the restrictions presented that dictate how exactly they are to wear the uniforms. This choice, though often favored by more prestigious schools to not only keep their students in line, but flaunt their school, is very restricting to the students as it nearly completely limits their self expression. The third and final choice was for the students to be able to wear Multiple Uniforms. The students would be allowed, boys and girls, to choose what form of the school uniform they wished to wear. There would be a choice of pants or skirts for the girls as well as a choice of pants or a kilt for the boys. Though

Ever since we started school we’ve had to deal with dress code. However, schools have different rules such as whether you have to wear uniforms or how short your skirts can be. My elementary school required us to wear uniforms and as the years went on the dress code got progressively stricter. When I moved on to high school it wasn’t much better. They would constantly send people to the office to get a change of clothes, but by doing this they also removed students from their classes, making them fall behind.…

Should Schools Continue to Enforce a Dress Code? Many people believe that the clothes people wear are a way for them to express themselves, and that schools should not restrict the creativity these clothes display. Although this may be true, school dress codes only restrict inappropriate clothes and articles of clothing that are distracting. Dress codes allows students to “express themselves” while also being appropriately covered and distraction free.…

When the times comes, they cannot be complaining that they have to wear uniforms if the school explicitly said they have uniforms. An example of trendy clothing is ripped jeans. Here at MLK Middle school our vice principal sees you wearing ripped jeans without leggings, she makes you change into your pe clothes and you also have an automatic detention. Most of those students are women, they get dress coded for their dresses, skirts and shirts, while the boys are waved over. Dress codes should and should not be required in schools because some clothes are too revealing, students have an advantage of hiding weapons in hats or coats, but some schools force students to wear uniforms. First of all, some clothes that students wear are too revealing. Kids come to school sometimes with shorts that do not cover their bottoms, guys have their pants sagging, and some girls wear shirts that reveal their chest area. Sports have uniforms that may show objects that should not be shown. For example, volleyball players are required to wear spandex to play in but some spandex do not cover their entire behind.…

Dress code is a subject that students feel should be less strict. Certain ideas and concepts pertaining to school dress code can be more lenient while still being effective. There are many unnecessary rules that could easily be fixed instead of being so forbidding. For example, the sexism and gender bias in the code is derogatory towards female students. However, it is agreed that we should have a dress code of some sort rather than eliminating it all together.…

At least 58% of schools in the United States enforce a strict dress code. School dress codes and uniforms in private and public schools can be both helpful and harmful to students in relation to their learning and social skills. Implementing school dress codes has shown to increase concentration in the classroom due to the lack of extreme clothing or hair styles, less peer pressure since everyone has to wear the same clothes, and an increase in school safety. According to Don Woodard, a high school principal in Johnston county, The students’ “demeanor is better and there are fewer distractions because of teasing, or students being uncomfortable because of the apparel that others are wearing.” But they also say it's unconstitutional because schools are taking away students freedom of expression.…

Students are different individuals with unique characteristics. School uniform opponents, like myself, believe that students should not be forced to wear uniforms because it restricts the right of self-expression and individuality, and doesn’t improve academic achievement and attendance, and effects self-image. The first amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees its people the freedom of expression which is violated by establishing mandatory school uniforms. The ability of students to express themselves is limited when they are forced to wear the…
