A Fighter
I’m sitting in some loud, smokey, old bus on my way to my first real competition. I couldn’t tell my dad, he doesn’t mind me liking boxing but the last thing he needs to worry about is why I come home from a weekend away with a black eye. So I told him it was a class trip. Technically I wasn’t lying. So here I am with the same merry band of misfits that had become like a second family to me, they supported me through all the crap this last month.

“GO BACK TO IOWA YOU BUCK TOOTH HOBO!” Blondie shouts at me as I’m getting off the bus… That’s all I need when Blondie Makayla’s minion told me she wanted to fight me to “knock me off my high cow” See how clever they are (note my drowning sarcasm)

“Hit her back! Duck down Lexi!” Shelby

You’ve come a long way. You’re going to go even farther after you win this match.” She says smiling

“You’re going to go out there and kick butt for me Striker.” Matteo my new not so conservative best friend shouts from over by the vending machine. I almost laugh remembering how when we first met I had punched her in the gut and now we have become closer than ever. Who would have thought that was how good friendships are made?

'Ding Ding Ding’
The bell sounds and our smiles leave as we slowly walk towards each other tapping gloves before circling the ring never taking our eyes off the other. I take a deep breath and focus my thoughts and feelings so that the fight is the only thing I see. I do exactly what I do everytime I get in a fight, I think about my mom and brother moving away, Makayla and her gang that’s been after me all year, my dad working himself down to the bone keeping us in our apartment. I feel anger swallow me and my eyes narrow as the rest of the gym disappears until it’s just me and her. Her eyes twitch to the side, I smirk knowing exactly what she’s planning. She fakes left and goes to swing at my right. Seeing this coming I grabbed her arm twisted it and used her unguarded torso to my advantage swinging right into her gut knocking her back a couple feet. I back away, suddenly I hear cheers from the others and the girl gets up and smiles at me before high fiving

The cheers get louder as I come back to reality. Even through all the cheers I can only hear my heart pounding in my ears and my heavy but steady breaths. I feel an almost animalistic growl come from my mouth as she lungs for me. I flip her down and slam her into the ropes with all my might and I hit and hit. I feel her stop fighting back. I’m being pulled away right as the bell sounds and my opponent drops to the floor groaning. She doesn 't get up....Cheers. That 's all that fills my ears when that final second goes by. I throw my hands up and shout as Coach, Matteo and the whole team tackle hug me. I smile up at the ceiling and start laughing as I feel the utmost relief finally letting all the stress and tension go. My heart pounds when they hand me the trophy and I feel tears involuntarily flow from my eyes. I did this. This was me. I am stronger than my struggles, then my bullies, then the stress. I fought this fight and won. I am a

I was 10 years old. I looked from the edge of the mat, unaware about the endeavor I was about to take the moment my foot touched that mat. I finally decided to walk on, like they had taught me by bowing, it was the first of a near million times I was going to do this. I was a white belt, at the best taekwondo centers in the area. Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end. I am definitely not a hero, but my journey of finding Christ and giving my life to him has absolutely made me into a better person overall. As I look at my journey of finding Christ, I see that it has many similarities to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.…
