The Crucible Language Analysis

“People were being torn apart, their loyalty to one another crushed.” This quote comes from Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, which was first presented at Martin Beck Theatre in New York. It is about Salem, Massachusetts, and how witchcraft took over. Throughout the book, the writing style of Miller, such as the jargon examples made by the women, emphasize a historic like realism depicting a certain time in history( The Crucible - Themes126). The way the play was written helped emphasize a time in history that, because of the selfish intentions, brought the downfall of not just the characters, but also the community. The way the trials were handled stood as symbolism for the mindset and attitudes of the American people during that significant moment in history that the play was written about( The Crucible - Themes 129).There is a parallel between the witch trials and committee trials during his time that people were summoned before an unchallengeable authority, questioned, subdued, and frequently coerced into the betrayal of others in order to escape being persecuted themselves( Sunstrand).This was important because through this play, Miller is able …show more content…
The Crucible proved that simple personal emotion and ambition could drive not only a person to their destruction, but the society along with it. The society does not fall altogether in one moment, it acts as a domino effect. As people lied on each other for their own protection or beliefs, such as Abigail condemning Rebecca because of her healthy family, you will see the condemner be destroyed along with them. Abigail was later testified against because she was accused of worshipping and walking with the devil.
