Academic Argument To be considered a top recruit you don’t even have to display your intelligence all you need to display is the athletic ability that you have obtained. The film “Hoop Dreams” shows the two main characters being pursued by college coaches because of what they could potentially bring to the team not what they can bring to the school. The only time education was important to Arthur and William was when their high school coach or counselor informed them that they had to reach a set score to be able to be recruited and attend the high-powered school. School was never the focus of the film because it only showed them in school for approximately two minutes it primarily took place at their homes or on the court during a game. The…
To Play or Not To Play???“Put Me in Coach” When people reminisce about their high school years, fond memories of being at the height of fitness, spending countless hours with teammates, and playing in the “Big Game” are often treasured. However, some students at St. Anthony High School are choosing not to be involved in the athletic program for social and academic reasons. As a result, many are missing out on one of the most important aspects of their high school career. Although some believe that participation in high school athletics is a roadblock towards academic success and a satisfying social life, students should play at least one sport throughout high school because they will develop critical life skills and increase their physical…
There is a stigma associated with attending Brookdale. It did not make sense to me, and I did not let it stop me. In my senior year of high school, I blatantly told everyone I was going to Brookdale and faced opposition. No one understood. I was in the top ten percent of my class.…
Broken Bones on the Practice Field On May 28, 2013 I tried out for my high school football team. Two years before that I had some feel of how it was in a helmet and pads. The feeling was great I loved the game…
By the end of their first year, most athletes acknowledged that their athletic- related activities affected their academic performance” (Adler and…
In the past four years, I have had many experiences with family, friends and an extreme amount of clubs, activities, and home life occasions I am involved in. But in all honesty sports have taught me a lot about people, life and even myself. I have been a part of many teams in my lifetime and played several abstract sports, but at Summit Academy High School the sports are very unique. There are mixed attitudes towards the teams, players and coaches that you would not see at any other school. But I like to call them obstacles and challenges.…
While I was in high school, I was able to letter in five different sports. (Ice hockey, XC, track and field, softball and basketball). I have had many opportunities to form different kinds of discipline, different ways to get my mind working and different views on how to take in/embrace things. I feel that because of my experiences, I can help teach students better understand a sport. I got offered a job as a basketball coach last year and I was able to put all of this into action.…
Student athletes be ultimately more prepared for a professional career if you implement this…
When I came to Hargrave in the 9th grade my plain was to better myself in academics and in baseball. Baseball has been one of my true passions since I was a little kid. My freshman year I was the youngest player on the Varsity team. I didn’t play much, but I knew it would be a learning experience so I accepting riding the bench the entire year.…
Despite a less time demanding schedule, professional athletes are paid while student athletes are not. However, student athletes are often compensated through scholarships. But, is a scholarship a fair way to compensate these students for their service to the university? This topic has piqued my interest because of the dedication I have to sports and education.…
An Athlete’s Worst Nightmare Imagine you are going along playing the sport you love, when all of a sudden you hear a pop, your knee gives out, and you are on the ground in pain. This happened to me not once, but twice. After going to the doctor both times, they figured out I tore my ACL.…
The moment you decide that you want to play the game of football, your life changes forever. At least mine did from the first time I strapped on my pads. I think Vince Lombardi reflected the essence of football in a small collection of words, “people who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.” The biggest part of the game is teamwork, a concept that I was introduced to early on, but we’ll get to that later. The first time I strapped on pads was in the hot August sun at 12 years old.…
I've never been quite the athletic type. For as long i can remember, sports have never been my thing. I’d always been picked last or second to last, in PE. back then, my inner pre-teen self would “blame it on the baby weight” or that i hadn’t hit puberty yet. But deep down i knew it was it was because I had two left feet, one good eye, and butter fingers.…
As I stepped foot on 48 acres of unknown land, my heart sank into my stomach. I was about to leave the comfort zone that I have had since the age of fiveto embark on a new journey; one filled with unknowns and no one to fall back on. All I had was myself, and it was then that I knew this new path in my life would transition me into an adult. It was time to start high school, but I would not be attending the high school my friends were; I was embarking on this journey alone.…
Being a student athlete is a wonderful thing in high school, despite a lot of people only acknowledge the athlete part and not the student part. I believe that academics come first and if a high school student wants to be an athlete, then getting good grades should be a requirement. It should be mandatory for teachers and coaches to check the grades of student athletes weekly to determine whether students are performing academically well or not. The students that aren’t doing well should be dismissed from any further games and practices until their grades improve. It is important that student athletes maintain good grades because the work that they put into their school performance carries with them through life, putting too much of an emphasis…
