This assignment was the most challenging because it required extensive research as oppose to the other two papers. However, upon completing this assignment, I had a better understanding on how to use scholarly sources in my writing. Additionally, the topic I chose for this assignment was very controversial, so I had to be sensitive and conscious when structuring my argument. Above all, I enjoyed writing the Researched Persuasive Letter the most because it was a difficult assignment and it forced me to go more in depth with my writing process. I felt very strongly towards my topic, which was proposing that oral contraception should be made over the counter or pharmacy access thus providing easier accessibility to women. I think every woman should have access to affordable contraception, and this assignment allowed me to research a topic that I am passionate about. I also took pleasure in researching opposing arguments toward my argument and incorporating those ideas into my …show more content…
For example, this course introduced me to The Rhetoric Triangle, for before this course I had no previous knowledge regarding the rhetoric triangle or rhetorical devices. The Rhetorical Triangle helped me interpret the different works that we read in class. Also I used the concept of the rhetorical triangle in my writing, and this rhetorical device allowed me to identify my audience and my role as a rhetor; thus, allowing me to effectively communicate to my audience through my text. Through this course I gained a better understanding of all the rhetorical appeals and how to use them appropriately in my

Rhetoric can be analyzed and broken down in various ways, and at times, in ways that the writer did not intend. When a reader begins to analyze a text, they intend to break it down into a matter they will understand. Yet, in several instances the reader does not understand how rhetoric’s role comes into play and how the writer intended to use these rhetorical concepts. In the texts, Writing with Teachers: A Conversation with Peter Elbow by David Bartholomae, and, Being a Writer vs. Being and Academic: A Conflict in Goals by Peter Elbow, rhetorical concepts such as ethos for example, are analyzed by the intended audience to help gain a better understanding of their main goals and the reasons for their stance in the discussion. With this being said, Elbow takes his work to a personal level and emphasizes a better use of ethos than that of the work of Bartholomae, and both use other forms of ethos such as arête, phronesis and eunoia, to better their argument.…

In this rhetorical analysis, I will be analyzing and comparing two essays, Richard Straub’s Responding— Really Responding— to Other Students’ Writing and Donald M. Murray’s Writing Before Writing, by exploring how effective the authors of the two works. I am analyzing and comparing use purpose, audience, persona, and context to convey what they are arguing through their usage of rhetorical appeals. To convey their ideas to their intended audience, both authors, Straub and Murray, appealed to ethos— credibility, pathos— emotion, and logos— logic and/ reasoning throughout their essays.…

During the first few weeks of ENG 1301, we’ve learned the significance of learning rhetorical skills while writing; specifically, the rhetorical triangle - also known as ethos, pathos, and logos appeals. Whether you need to beg your parents for more gas money, or you want to receive a raise from that revolting fast food chain you’re forced to work at to pay college tuition, these appeals are the foundation of persuasion and can move an audience in any which way the author pleases to do so. In order to be accepted into a community, one must deeply understand the overall purpose and interests of the group. Once this happens, you’ll be able to intuitively understand the discourse community’s way of communicating and interacting with one another.…

This course is the grand finale of my studies to obtain my associate degree. I have completed several courses that involved formal writing and I feel this class was a great conclusion to the first part of my educational journey. As I reflect on the past eight weeks, I would describe this Cornerstone Seminar course as very educational and a bit overwhelming. This last assignment is my digital portfolio of my writing and research technique throughout this course. Beginning with Malcolm Gladwell’s bestseller “Outliers”.…

The paper itself followed all of the criteria, and my simplistic writing style allowed the reader to straightforwardly comprehend the message that I was trying to convey. While it did contain some incoherent sentences such as, “His repetitiveness compels the audience to listen and his extreme exaggerations show the audience that the situation is bad and needs to be fixed immediately,” (Nguyen “King’s Persuasion for Success” 3). I recognized that I did not have an extensive vocabulary; I was not able to efficiently argue my point in a consistent fashion. As I continued this course, I realized that my downfall would be because of my lack of experience and…

Module 1 had four learning objectives, understanding the rhetorical situation, considering relationships among audience, text, and purpose, Textual analysis, and developing thesis statements. By reading the assigned text, I found out how to read and analyze texts rhetorically, define rhetorical situation, connect exigence to purpose, and found effective strategies for analyzing rhetorical texts. To read text and analyze it correctly you have to first gather information. You should know whose speaking, the occasion, the audience, purpose, subject, and tone. Next you need to examine the appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos.…

Title Enrolling the EOF program has lighten up a path in life that would have gone completely undiscovered had I walked alone. Along the path was my introduction to college writing, a class that has improved my writing skills profoundly. At first the tasks given to us on the syllabus seemed daunting, almost insurmountable within the five-week period of the program; it seemed even more inconceivable with the class being only twice a week. However, with the guidance and instruction given to me by the professor and peers I was able to strengthen my work as a student.…

After nearly a semester of writing 101 at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, my writing has evolved throughout a serious of projects contained in this portfolio. These projects have improved my understanding of rhetorical situations and the elements of essays and nonfiction through active and critical reading. They have also required me to show attention to audience, purpose, genre, diction, tone, organization, and other aspects of the rhetorical context. In this reflection, I have included four discourses (a personal discourse, a public discourse, a professional discourse, and an academic discourse): a memoir, an event profile, an informational report, and a textual analysis. I have also included six journal entries from throughout the…

In writing it is known to acquire both strengths and challenges especially when remaining on topic and not drifting away onto another topic. I have discovered that over some time now with being a full-time assistant teacher for an eigth grade math class that it is too tough with writing. In math we begin to implement a writing strategy (R.I.C.E.) for responding to short answer questioning. The strengths that I have as a writer is thinking beyond the topic and comparing it onside of reality. I consider myself a somewhat strong and creative writer when it involves a topic that grasps my attention and I can easily relate to.…

Honestly as the semester progressed I believe my writing stared out strong and began to decrease as the semester went on. I believe this is partially linked to the lack of motivation and the senioritis as a second year in college. Overall I still did well with all the essays but I think they decreased in overall quality as the semester went on. But what I did improve on is how to begin and essay and how to get the reader interested in reading my essay.…

Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…
