INTRODUCTION A terrorist walks into a church during a midweek worship service and opens fire with an assault rifle. Several worshippers are either dead or wounded. Where was God during this tragedy? Why would an all-powerful God allow something like this to happen? The answer to this question from an orthodox Christian point of view is that evil is the result of God’s creation exercising their God-given free will. We live in a world that has been corrupted by the sin of one man – Adam. We are told in Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” All of the natural disasters, terrorist plots, diseases, famine, and humans exercising their free will to commit unspeakable acts such as murder, torture and rape are a result of the sin of one man. It should also be noted that even though these acts are evil by any account, they all happen under the divine control and sovereign will of God. God knows everything that will ever occur and will mold or shape the events of history in order to accomplish His purposes. It is indeed difficult for our finite minds to grasp such the idea of how such events fit into the sovereign plan of God for His creation. Some however do not accept that God knows and even controls …show more content…
In opposition to traditional theology, open theists believe that God must respond to His created beings in a “creative and resourceful” way because He allows us to exercise the freedom He has given us. Therefore, the future is “open” in the sense that there are still things that God cannot know because they are contingent on the future decisions of those to whom He has granted libertarian freedom. Human freedom is therefore, human freedom is incompatible with the perspective that God can know all future

    Nestorius

1 Nestorius placed a special emphasis on the humanity of Jesus. He began preaching against the title Theotokos or Mother of God, beginning to be used of the Virgin Mary. He distinguished between the logos (“divine nature”) and Christ (the Son, the Lord) as a union of divine nature and human nature. He refused to attribute the human acts and the sufferings of Jesus to the divine nature, arguing that God could not suffer on the cross, as God is omnipotent. Therefore the Virgin Mary, could not be viewed as the Mother of God, but simply as the mother of a man.…

The concept of Divine Foreknowledge asserts that a divine being knows what everyone will do in his/her life. Free will is the belief that humans can make decisions every day for themselves without anything interfering with their choice. The best way to describe divine foreknowledge is through the eternity theory of God, the concept that God exists outside of time. The eternity concept is the argument that makes the most sense for Divine Foreknowledge as it is the only way that we can conceive that God is an all-knowing being and allow for humans to have free will. (EXPLAIN WHY ETERNITY THEORY IS BETTER FOR DIVINE FOREKNOWLEDGE)…

Ludwig Wittgenstein was a philosopher who studied analytic philosophy, he firmly believed that human intention and free will are both things that are real, and cannot necessarily be measured. He once posed the question “When ‘I raise my arm’, my arm goes up. And the problem arises: what is left over if I subtract the fact that my arm goes up from the fact that I raise my arm?”, the answer to that quotation being human intention, free will and conscious choice. In“Gattaca” individuals live in a society where they have strict laws they must abide by. Although, Ludwig Wittgenstein’s message is perfectly demonstrated when the citizens do the opposite of this, when they make their own decisions rather than letting society control and dictate their every move.…

Saint Augustine’s book The City of God talks about the idea of free will and whether humans are truly able to exhibit the idea of free will if God knows all the can possibly happen. During the time of St. Augustine and still to this day many question if humans really are able to exhibit free will, but instead are subject to the will of God. St. Augustine instead perched the idea that humans do exhibit free will, whether it be through the wills of God or against it. St. Augustine argues that it is true God knows all the possibilities that a person could live but it is still up to the person to decide what they do and though God tries to push you towards the best possible solution the human still has the decision to choose what he wants. God…

Just because God knows the future doesn’t mean He is up there pulling strings like a puppeteer. When I drop a piece of food on the ground, I know my dog is going to eat it, but that doesn’t mean I forced my dog to eat it. If you have seen the recent Sherlock Holmes movies (with Robert Downey Jr.) you can get a visual of what knowing the future without causing it might look like. Sherlock Holmes is very logical so he foresees immediate events (like the fight scenes) before they actually happen. Now Sherlock Holmes is just a fictional character, but If God does exist, it could be reasonably deduced that He is omniscient and He created a world that He knows all possible outcomes (because God has perfect logic) without directly causing it (pulling the strings).…

The Problem of Evil from a non-Christian perspective How does Islam address the Problem of Evil differently? With hundreds of people dying everyday, and with the increasingly violent world we live in, many people wonder why God lets this happen. Why does God let people be killed under his name, if he is the all-powerful, good and wise god that theists claim him to be. The ancient problem of Evil that Hume reintroduces in his book Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion goes like this: Is God willing to prevent evil, yet he is not able to do so? If so, he is not all-powerful.…

Introduction I. In this paper, I will be arguing for the following claim that we, human beings are not predetermined beings, but rather we have free will. It has long been argued that people are not free and do not have free will; that rather than having free will we live in a world that is predetermined. That our choices and actions are reflections of and happen because of a long line of other choices and action that caused the present, and thus we have a fixed future. This is just not the case.…

Does free will exist? As humans came to enlightenment, the concept of free will concerned many philosophers’ thoughts, especially in philosophy of religion. Many came to question, whether humans have free will or they just do what needs to be done based on God’s plan. Therefore, many philosophers assume that the meaning of free will is the ability to choose to do something with one’s desire or to be free to choose.…
