This is important because it shows that Eli knows he does not need to live in a disgusting way, he has the choice to be clean. The toothbrush symbolizes new and better things for the man. This establishes the theme of fate and freewill because Eli knows that he is able to make decisions that will make his life better, he is not fated to the life he and his brother once created. The same aspects are not evident with Charlie; never does he comment or make any effort to change. Charlie is not open to change and this is obvious after trying the toothpaste for the first time and remarking that “’ [He doesn’t] like it,’ he said. ‘[He think‘s] it’s foolish.’ ‘Think what you like.
