Purgatory, a place “where the purgatorial souls are undergoing a transitional spiritual journey” according to Glenn in her journal entry, Dante in Purgatory: States of Affect (362). In this amazing world that Dante has created not a straightforward road but, rather, an undergoing process of transformation (Glenn 262). Through this journey of transformation Dante goes through each of the seven cornices. Dante realizes in the first couple of levels that the force that helps him confirm his transformation from each level is free will. For Dante, free will is a positive thing, but free will will only take him so far. The reason for that is because free will is not strong enough to reach Earthy Paradise nor Heaven.
