While some stories and philosophers may believe that one’s destiny is something that is already decided and set out for them, I personally disagree. For me, when looking at history, sometimes it can seem like one’s fate is already set based on the actions in the past. An example of this would be A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. The main character believes his life is already set and dictated by what has happened in the past to African Americans. But, at the end of the play, he makes a decision completely unlike what he was expected to. While I technically agree, I believe it is important to consider other factors. In terms of oppression and the disadvantages of the unprivileged, I do not see it working if we make them all equal per say. If we take a privileged person and an oppressed person and put them equally, the person with privilege will still have an advantage as they always have. Equity is something I feel better fits that situation. While equality makes everyone the same, equity gives those on the lower end of the scale a fair playing field. Instead of making everyone the same and ignoring the differences and advantages that some people have over others, equity gives those who don’t benefit from the privileges of others chances to reach the same level of the person of privilege.

This question is not very simple as it completely varies from person to person. No one has the exact same values placed at equal importance as someone else. So, the decision as to how one brings value to their life wholly depends upon their personal values and what values are more important to them.
