The high cost of university and college continues to be an issue in Canada, with students consistently crippled by debt. University and College should have free tuition, making education more equal and accessible, as an economic investment for the government, and to have a more educated workforce and population.
With a higher incentive from free tuition to go to university, the country ends up with a more educated population and workforce. In the modern world it’s crucial that the population understands their role on the world stage, and the responsibilities they have. Education helps to make that clear, helping citizens make educated decisions towards their democracy (Huda). Globally, countries have begun to make the switch to socialized education, which has begun to show links to a much higher quality of life in those that receive education (Huda). This inequality of opportunity is a major issue. Often times the most qualified students won’t even be able to afford post secondary, leaving only the wealthy able to learn and earn qualifications. In this system, education isn’t something everyone can access. Those that do manage to get into university often also get into debt, forcing them to spend time they could be studying, working. This introduces new stress, bringing to life an array of mental health issues often seen in those who take out loans. A 2015 study of 8000 youth by the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics found that there is a strong correlation between students who took out more student loans and poor mental health in adulthood (Sagan). If free tuition was offered, we would introduce an equality and financial diversity into universities, while giving every student the same situation to succeed
