Free throws wins games is most likely a phrase that most athletes hear from their basketball coaches. Even though they are only worth a point, they tend to occur at the most crucial parts of the game. For example, one second remains on the clock and your team is tied with the opposing one. The ball is in your hands, you control the outcome of the game. If you miss it, the other team has a chance to score and win. If you make it, your team wins. Thus, free throws win games. If only it was as simple as putting the ball to the net. Shooting a free throw starts in the mind. It is just as much of a mental thing as a physical. Whether it be in your driveway, the gym, or at the end of a close game, the one thing you must be equipped with is focus. …show more content…
It is of great importance that you put a routine in place every time you go to the line whether it be just for practice or for a game. Each routine is different. There are a multitude of different things that you can do to prepare yourself for the free throw. Personally, I prefer to take two hard dribbles and then spin the ball in my hands. Other examples are things such as spinning the ball around your waist or some people prefer no dribble before the shot. Make sure to keep this routine short and simple, and not so complex that you can not even remember it. Do not spent so much time on it that you forget why you are even up there, and of course, stay focused, stay confident. Now for the hands, position the ball so that the numbers on it are facing you. Place your dominant hand so that your index finger is lined up slightly below the needle hole on the ball. Space your fingers about a half of an inch apart and place your other hand on the side of the ball so the center of your palm lines up where the lines on the ball meet. Make sure only the fingertips on your dominant hand are touching the ball and that your elbow is adjacent to your hip touching it slightly. This will help to make the shot more accurate. From your hands, go to the face. It is cruical that you keep your eyes on the basket even when doing your routine, it will help you to get focused, and stay focused.
