The “Free the Nipple” movement is a campaign against women’s body objectification where a woman is liberated from her oppressing societal norms. In response to the societal models prohibiting women to freely expose their bodies, women have uploaded images of themselves breastfeeding or modestly showing their nipples as a form of awareness. Women have re-posted images of themselves and others on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram to support the movement. However, Instagram as well as other media outlets have censored some images due to its policies and the founder’s opposition to the movement. For example, if you search #freethenipple you might not find any images or merely discover posts where women are covered in male breasts or using T-shirts with drawn-on nipples. According to Instagram and other applications, posts displaying a woman’s nipple or her genital area may be offensive to other users, such allegations have given them the right to prohibit and erase posts. As explained by Instagram, the content erased could've included “abusive …show more content…
Since 7:00 A.M. to now (6:30 P.M. May 7, 2016), #Breastfeeding has been used 186 times (Hashtags.org). Tumblr, a social networking and blog type website, is one of the application that does not eliminate posts or pictures with nudity content as opposed to websites like Instagram which removes all content involved with nudity, including pictures of women breastfeeding (if they see it or if it is reported). One woman posted a picture breastfeeding her child while walking in the store and dispersed across diverse social media accounts with shares and comments. The post has received a total of 43,508 shares, 331 likes, and more than 100 comments. However, not all comments showed support for the movement as one man commented that he was sick of seeing breastfeeding posts and that the only people to see a woman’s breast should be the husband and child. To his dismay, several people responded to him by stating that the problem was that he automatically assumed she was in a heterosexual relationship in addition to the stereotype that to have a baby she should be married. As well, he automatically sexualized the woman’s body, even though the ‘real’ purpose of women’s breasts are to provide food and nutrition to their

Over the previous years, our society as a whole has become very opinionated about what is acceptable and what is not. Things that were once appropriate are now being reconsidered and deemed inappropriate. The media has created controversial conversations by asking questions like "should breastfeeding be allowed in public? " Our society has started discussing and questioning whether or not it is indecent for a woman to breastfeed in public, even if they are completely covered, being discreet, and not disturbing anyone. Now there are special rooms being made in some places, like University’s for example, so women can breastfeed without being seen by anyone.…

In the society we live in today, people don’t typically recognize the fact that there are completely unjust standards held for women than there are for men. Women are obligated to a supplement of rules, morals, and responsibilities to stand by in regards of their bodies and research shows that women aren’t allowed to do certain things because they’re seen as ethically wrong; however, if men were to do the exact same action it would be considered no big deal. The viral campaign, Free The Nipple, shows this double standard transparently by revealing that men can be topless in public and not get cited for public indecency whereas women can’t bare their areolas without facing judgment and discretion from the public. So why are these standards…

Although the current feminist movement has revoked some stigma from public breastfeeding, mothers are still ridiculed for feeding their children. A mother will be walking through the local shopping mall with her infant son; the baby begins to cry and he must be fed. Her only options are to either modestly cover herself as she feeds him on a bench, or go to the public restroom and feed her child in a graffiti-covered stall congested with the scent of feces and stale urine. She opts to feed her son on the bench. She receives critical gazes from bystanders who remain unfazed by the half-dressed Calvin Klein model plastered on the store beside her.…

Despite the fact that breastfeeding is known to be beneficial to the health of both mother and infant alike, in North American societies the media constantly sexualises the breast, and depicts breastfeeding as indecent and inappropriate. As a result, women are incessantly being shamed for making the choice to publically breastfeed their child. It seems as though the only remedy for this societal issue is to have more positive representations of breastfeeding in the media, specifically in television. However, from public figures bashing breastfeeding, to television shows negatively portraying it for laughs, there is a lot of work that must be done for its must needed normalization. As a result of these issues, breastfeeding rates are low and…

Society today has various perceptions on the human body particularly the female body. I believe that in the U.S and other countries the female body has been hypersexualized to point where it’s the only way we are seen today. Breasts specifically have always sparked an interest in society. Breasts have always received a lot of attention and have generated this fixation that they are primarily something sexual. Yes it is part of our sex life and can be sexual but we have to remember biologically they are there to feed our babies.…

Actress Alyssa Milano was quoted as saying “You know, I think people are more comfortable sexualizing breasts than relating them to what they were made for, which is feeding another human. It’s crazy.” Olivia Wilde said “I was shocked that there were still people who find it (breastfeeding) inappropriate because they think it’s a sexual thing. I think that says a lot about them.” Breastfeeding is a natural practice that has taken place since the beginning of time and mothers who chose to breastfeed in public should not be condemned by the American people for providing their child with their basic human right.…

The “Free the Nipple” equality movement was first launched in 2014, when director, Lina Esco, released a film called “Free the Nipple” based on the quest to, “… [not only] advocate for women to bare their chests at any and all given times; rather, it seeks to strip society of its tendencies toward the sexualization and oppression of the female upper body, addressing hypocrisies and inconsistencies in American culture and legal systems that enforce its taboos.” Esco’s mission on creating this film was to expose the unjust treatment of the female areola being deemed “extraordinarily crude (“immoral and evil”)” and to alleviate this controversial issue, Esco exposed how women’s bodies were handled in New York City when women would pull public stunts of nudity and generating graffiti installations. Not only does this campaign revolve around targeting the naked eye, but also reflect how society reacts to female nipples online. With this, it was quickly seen that although legally acceptable in public, female areolas are quickly removed from all social media platforms, but a man’s areola doesn’t seem to violate “graphic content” guidelines set by these companies. Seeing how society perceives the female nipple, Esco and activists continue to respond to these decisions by actively rallying together to…

If both males and females have breast that can accomplish the same abilities, why is only one of them censored? Why not both? Or an even better idea, why not neither? These are not sexual organs, there is no reason they should be censorship, especially one that promotes gender inequality. If a child were to grow up in a society where women’s breast are freely exposed, they would understand that it was just how humans are made, not that breast are considered genitalia.…
