Free the Children – Charity When looking at organizations in relation to social economy “Free the Children” can be recognizes as an international charity. Free the children’s main projects involve adopting a village (in Africa, Asia, and Latin America) where their main focus is on children and education. This organization was founded in 1995 by human rights advocates Craig Kielburger and Marc Kielburger after reading though Toronto Star newspaper and coming across an article about the murder of 12 year old Pakistani boy called Iqbal Masih, who spoke against child labour. As states 49% of funds is spent towards domestic projects, 42% for international projects and 9% goes towards general and admin. When looking at their sources of income in the past year on average 27% of Free the Children’s funding comes from direct contributions and in-kind support generated by young people, which is achieved by bake sales, to walk-a-thons, garage sales and coin drives. The remainder of their funding comes from: adults (11%), corporations (37%), foundations (21%), and the government (3%). In relation to education Free the Children also builds schools and also focuses on providing teacher training, extracurricular programs, books and basic school supplies to that children can focus on their studies without worrying about absent teachers or lack of learning materials. Their main targeted locations are places with high child labour, minimal female opportunities, and child exploitation. Another way Free the Children benefits society is by bringing clean water to communities that are in need or deprived from it.
