Iqbal Masih's heroic but tragic story of bondage, escape, and activism is what inspired the founders of the Free the Children Organization. Founded in 1995 after Craig Kielburger read the story of 12 year old Iqbal's murder after he escaped from slave labor and became the voice against child labor practices in Pakistan. Kileburger at the time was the same age as young Masih and was inspired by his story. Together with his older brother Marc the Free the Children Organization was imagined and born with it's mission being to bring awareness to child labor practices domestically with the hope of finding a means to end it international.ly.
Since it's founding the organization has grown and developed into a multifaceted operation. While it's mission is still to end child labor and protect the human rights of children both domestic and internationally, it now employs several different techniques to achieving this goal. One of the young founders first projects was to collect signatures to show support for an imprisoned Indian child labor activist. This was done with Craig fellow classmates when he was 12. That principle of youth involvement is still a prevailing factor in the organizations operations. Spurred by the death of 38 child workers at a fireworks facility in China the organization built several schools throughout Rural China. These schools with the help of local government and the community provide textbooks, uniforms, and supplies to students. The five pillar model was instituted and clean sanitation measures, health initiatives to offer accessible care, programs to combat the iron deficiency anemia that many of the Chinese children have , and other measures are being utilized. The program has been in effect since 2008 and continues to make
