Captivating love stories are known for taking place in Hollywood movies or in New York City theaters. Who could have ever fathom that one would begin in a southern small town in Caroline County, Virginia with Richard Perry Loving and Mildred Delores Jeter in 1958 when they made their vows to never part and be wedded forever. To the rest of the world; Richard and Mildred were no wonders to behold; nor was there any such thing as a love story between these two as they stared on. The state of Virginia said no to their love by arresting the both of them and later setting Richard a white man free. Mildred a black woman was not set free immediately and had to endure the humiliation while boldly saying to the world; don’t gaze at me because I’m dark.
What a unique name for a case that’s attached to miscegenation. Hating and loving in the same sentence is a complete and total oxymoron but thank God; Loving wins. Mildred was 17yrs old and Richard was 23yrs old in 1958. Miscegenation is the interbreeding of people considered to be of different racial types and that was the case; literally. In the wee hours of the mourning; sheriffs came busting through their bedroom door in the middle of night arresting them for a crime that should have never been a crime. Mildred had no knowledge of what Richard knew and initially didn’t know why this was happening. Richard spent one night in jail and was released the next morning. Mildred had to endure two in jail before their case was heard. They didn’t allow her family to bring her a clean dress; nor was she able to shower the whole duration of her time in jail and when the court proceeding took place; she was gazed at because of her darkness by all in the courtroom. Richard was worry about his “Bean” a nickname Mildred had since a
