Free Lunch

The acronym TANSTAAFL stands for “There Ain’t No Such Thing as a Free Lunch” as stated in our attend section by Dr. Sexton and Mr. Henderson (Henderson, 2014; Sexton, 2012-A). This concept is simple it means we have a choice and when a decision is made, there will be costs. Dr. Sexton talked about goods and services being scarcity; this means there are not enough products for everyone. Because of the supply and demand, this creates competition in the consumer marketplace.
Currently, my household has two (2) people attending college, myself and our oldest son. When I started back to college, a choice was made to use my extra time (family time) to complete my assignments. This trade-off was and is still hard. If I don’t maintain my focus, I will not meet the weekly deadlines established by Bethel University’s On-line platform. I’ve completed thirty-three hours in my program of choice. My time is valuable to me. My family and I have given up a lot of it to

I believe they do not understand that nothing is free. Someone has to pay. I like my son will have debt, I would suggest that for college to free I (working taxpayer) would pay much more in taxes this would deplete that available capital for the rest of my family. Some could argue that government policy to make college tuition free would level the playing field. But, the trade-off would impose hardships on the working community like tax levies (Sexton, 2012-A; Sexton, 2012-B). It could force some schools to close and others would grow but would it reshape the post-secondary education system fair for student or the institution. This standard tuition (free) would limit the institution ability hire top-notch professors and staff. Or would it undermine the programs of study? This causes conflicts between the respective parties (Sexton,

Nothing Is Free The highly popular debate on whether or not college tuition should be free for every American citizen has been long argued back and forth. In Keith Ellison’s article “The Argument for Tuition-Free College” he brings to the table some facts and reasoning on why every American should be entitled to tuition free college. Keith starts off right away by informing the reader of the increasing student loan debt that is placing so many college students into unstable economic situations after graduating. He then touches on how this extremely expensive schooling is making it nearly impossible for families of low income and unfortunate backgrounds to send their kids to get the education they deserve. Keith believes that these college…

Everybody would be paying with taxes for this free college. Although people might not have to pay a lot of taxes, that is still more taxes that I personally do not want to pay. Another idea that I liked from the article was how there are programs that help with paying for books. Books, tuition, and living expenses is the main expenses for a college student. If books were cheaper at book stores and tuition was little to none, there would be a lot less student loan debt.…

With an increased amount of student’s campuses would not have enough parking or campus space to hold all the students they would be enrolling. Increasing the number of students would mean more faculty would have to be hired to ensure enough classes, security, and services could be offered to students. Increases in college tuition is due to, “Colleges competing for students, and the means of attracting top students–hiring the best professors, maintaining beautiful campuses, etcetera– costs money” (Renehan), which is believed that the higher quality of education they receive the higher their lifetime salary will be. On the contrary, “Schools with lower tuition do not have the revenue to hire top professors or to maintain modern learning technology” (Renehan), which is believed that one will receive a basic education and will not have a high paying job later in their lives. Free college would leave colleges competing with one another trying to improve their campuses.…

Some people argue that colleges should not be free because it would waste too much taxpayers’ money. I respect their thinking, but the thinking is incomplete. As taxpayers, we all pay taxes, so we should all have direct benefits. The reason why we pay taxes is to fund all the things what we need in society. Taxes are paid for the police, for the roads and for the social security etc.…

In this way, the free college policy does not effectively save money for most of the American parents. Some people like Bernie Sanders may suggest that the Wall Street speculators would be another method of supporting the young students for college. However, it is impossible for those speculators to spend their money on profitless projects. Besides, many students are not able to pay the loan back until many years after their graduation so it would be unrealistic to ask Wall Street speculators to support the public education. Thus, the free public college is not absolutely financially…

Education For Everyone Education is something that everyone should be able to have. Knowledge is not something that should be for sale. Everyone should be able to have equal opportunity. This is why there should be no cost for receiving a college education. The general argument made by Carol Roth in the article “Free Community College Isn’t Free...and it’s a Bad Idea” is that saying that college will be free when it really won’t, and it will cause more problems and evidently not solve any current problems.…

Though, this solution that seems to do all good still has negatives. Just like its opposing argument why college should not be free has various points which support its claims but there are also reasons why it is not an entirely good decision as well. This is why college should neither be free or extremely expensive but it should be cheaper so that more students will have the opportunity to go to college and the students going already won’t have to deal with the insane price of an…

We don’t need to be giving more money to the rich we need to be taking money from the rich to start helping out the poor more. Free college would cost a lot of money and the money has to come from somewhere. If America somehow changed and moved to a tuition free college where would we get the money from? Taxes are the number one way to get money from. College Raptor says, “Who gets taxed seems to vary based on who is talking, but it seems certain that the upper echelons of American society will see increased taxes if this passes.…

New Republic is opposed to it saying “The main problem with free college is that most students come from disproportionately well-off backgrounds and already enjoy disproportionately well-off futures, which makes them relatively uncompelling targets for public transfers.” Many disagree, saying “College should be free to all students. Just like students have a right to elementary and secondary education, students should have a right to obtain higher education. If a person has a desire to learn more, they should not be forced to stop learning after high school due to a lack of money or connections” (Academic OneFile). Students that have been raised in the middle or lower class may not have the income, work, and time to support them in top well known colleges.…

School is a necessary system worldwide to invest in a society 's future. The primary argument as to why educational institutions should be free in the U.S. is not to give everyone the equal opportunity to education as stated by Lawrence (a professor of History emeritus at SUNY Albany) although it is one of the reasons, the primary reason is to increase the number of educated workers to hopefully improve our economy. It is stated that an “educated work force has become an essential component of economic growth and competitiveness (Student Aid Alliance). However, college tuition filters out those who are not willing to pay for their education and also funds universities so that they are able to function and upgrade their facilities. College should not be free because it would lead to tax raises, the value of a degree would decline, and the overall quality of the educational environment would decrease.…
