Free Fallin Analysis

Tom Petty’s hit song, Free Fallin’, was released in 1989. The hit was premiered on his album “Full Moon Fever.” Although the song was released almost 30 years ago, the song remains popular. The album reached No.3 on the charts, the song reaching No.7 alone the week it hit the market. Tom Petty’s Free Fallin’ was originally written in efforts to make his partner laugh. The popular hit was written down in about an hour. “A good song should give you a lot of images, you should be able to make your own little movie in your head to a good song (Olsen, 2016).” Petty’s song gives you a bit of a mischief feeling when you hear it in the beginning, but when the chorus comes around, you begin to feel like you are letting go and taking in life around you. October 2, 2017, when news was spread that Tom Petty had passed away, Coldplay and Peter Buck came together to cover the song ‘Free Fallin’’ as a tribute to Tom Petty’s memory as well as to honor the victims of the mass shooting that took place in Las Vegas. Before performing, Coldplay asked the crowd for a moment of silence to remember the victims of the shooting and the life of Tom Petty who died at age 66. Coldplay and Peter Buck stayed within the same accompaniment as they attributed their performance. Lead singer, Chris Martin, gave way to a lower octave of lyrics, particularly noticeable around the 1:50 maker of the video. His voice gives a deeper sound, giving an impression of sorrowful emotion, appropriate to the circumstances that the song is being performed
