In the Beowulf epic women are portrayed as frail and, fragile while men play a more dominant and independent role. This is an assumption so prevalent that it was not only used in modern literature, nevertheless in a film made almost recently (Gunnarsson, 2005). Furthermore, the roles that females play in Beowulf are far from insignificant and should certainly be re evaluated from an Anglo-Saxon perspective.
The most substantial source of literature from the Anglo-Saxon period is discern in the Beowulf epic. The common assumption comes from the reading of this poem and the thought that they determine that women are believed to take on a the predictably subservient role. She does glorious wonders when she delivers the kingdom of the Geats to Beowulf. Hygd is considered a main character in this epic yet she is nowhere to be seen in the cinema. the importance of women is extremely vital and for the media to cut out a role so vital to the story makes hardly any sense.
Both Beowulf the epic and Beowulf and Grendel the cinema portray different ways in which the role of a woman is degraded. The women in Beowulf are the presenters of the Anglo-Saxon culture that should the value of someone’s doing rather than the gender. As the changes show the perspective that the men have of woman is not as controlling as it would have normally been.
