The Epic Odyssey
The epic odyssey. One may take this phrase two ways, is there an epic journey, or is it referring to the epic called The Odyssey. The Odyssey, by Homer, is considered by many to be an epic story, but what makes this epic story an epic poem? What makes The Odyssey an epic poem is the fact that Odysseus is just as important nationally as the book itself was in ancient greece, but in the story, Odysseus catches the eyes of gods, goddesses, and monsters, almost all of which cause trouble for Odysseus and his crew. Odysseus says it as if it were normal to find Cyclopes. Odysseus then goes on to meet the cyclops without much fear of it, which turned out to not be a good idea for his crew. Before this, Odysseus talks of his “visit” to Circe, “...as Circe of Aeaea, the enchantress, desired me and detained me in her hall” (15-16). Odysseus was kept for a year by a supernatural enchantress, and only talks of it for a mere sentence. Odysseus even says an understatement such as “desire”, though she did a little more than “desire” Odysseus. His monster encounters do not stop there though, because he meets Scylla and Charybdis, two horrid mythical monsters who had struck Odysseus’ ship and men (663-635). Odysseus must choose between fending himself off from one or the other, and it happens to be Circe, the aforementioned supernatural being, who makes the decision for Odysseus. Scylla eats some of Odysseus’ shipmates, and disguises as a rock, creating the challenge of getting past her without knowing which rock she is. This is what makes Odysseus’ journey an epic.
