December 3, 1997 was an especially cold day in New York. I myself was freezing, but the heat of Jared’s body warmed me. I could feel his heartbeat, the rise and fall of his chest and his warm breath, just tinted with the scent of the gum he was chewing. I knew Jared better than anyone, I sat around his neck all day every day. He never takes me off, I am the cross that lays center of his chest and I am a force that guides him throughout his life. But tonight felt different.

On a good day I can feel all of Jared’s thoughts, I can step inside his mind and understand what he’s going through, so I can help him through his trials. Tonight I couldn't feel any of that. It was like he had shut me out. It was dark inside his shirt and I couldn’t see what was going on outside around me, but I could hear people moving

Before his father died he was very close to him and I felt that this would be the most effective course of action. We appeared on the island I had created I could feel something was wrong, there as another presence here, one that was stronger than I was. I knew Jared could sense it too. The moment he woke up another being appeared, it was his boss whom he had just killed. I was surprised at first, but then the pieces started falling into place. Another aspect of Jared’s personality had hijacked our travels and was trying to keep Jared on his current path. At first I was worried, but I realized that all it meant was I would have to play this scenario smarter than I originally planned. Ultimately this landscape that I had created rested on Jared’s conscious, so it was his to control as he pleased, but he doesn’t know that quite yet.

I stood at the edge of the tree line as I watched the other man help Jared up. At first Jared was startled, but he quickly realized who it was and relaxed. Somehow without my knowledge this other manifestation of Jared was able to block out the bad
