Having free community college is a huge opportunity for many Americans across the United States. This idea was brought forth by President Obama recently. I first heard of this topic on the local news station. When I brought the topic up with my friends it created an argument between debating if it should be free. My peers were much divided on the subject. This topic brings my attention because I come from a low income family. Not having much money while growing up makes it hard to get a good education. Many of the people who discuss the topic only see the money aspect of the topic. Many people only care about how it will affect them personally. My audience is the American public because that’s who will be affected. Any individual that is planning to go college and the taxpayer who will ultimately be funding the program. This program could potentially help any Americans get out of poverty. It will affect other by raising taxes to fund the national program. Being able to address the general public is very important in writing my essay. The most common question that everyone wants answered is how it will affect them. An article written by Stuart Butler, a senior writer at The Brookings Institution brings up an overlooked idea. The Brookings Institution is a non-profit public organization that specializes in giving Americans the research that they need. The Brookings Institution works to strengthen American democracy, economy, and people to make better and more informed decisions. Butler goes on to say that the plan encourages low-income students to settle for community colleges and not go on to further studies (Stuart Butler, 2015).
