Over the years, college tuition has gone up. As they do so, the number of enrollment along with the number of graduates have decreased. As a direct result of this, there has been a decrease of people in the work force with college degrees. To fight this, President Obama presented “Americas College Promise Plan”. A program proposed to offer two years of free college tuition to students. Many states have since, created their own programs. This giving people a chance to be students, a chance they may not have had if it wasn’t for these programs.
Free college tuition has four major benefits, it is projected to increase completion rate of a four-year degree, funding is not an issue and will not harm the United States, the programs are producing higher enrollment and graduate numbers and the works towards rebuilding the middle class. The benefits of free college tuition are far more significant than the negatives, and really, there are no negatives significant enough to impact the U.S. negatively. Let’s start with why free college tuition is even a thing. In January 2015, President Obama proposed a program called “Americas College Promise Plan”. This program will allow up to two years of paid off college tuition to those who qualify. Obamas proposed program pushed individual states to create their own programs. Each individual state has their own qualifications to meet for a person to be in the program. In Minnesota, you must maintain a 2.5 GPA, earn less than $90,000 a year, enroll within two years of graduating high school or take and equivalency test, complete at least 30 hours of community service and participate in a mentoring program (Patton, 32). This is just one of the states that has created a program for itself. Many others have done the
