In Othello, many of the characters make key errors in judgment. Among these characters are Othello, Iago, Brabantio, and Emilia. Some of these blunders do not cost much in the grand scheme, but some cost something tremendously precious. Othello makes one fatal error in judgment that costs his and another’s life. Emilia helps Iago in his plot to take down Othello, without proper forethought. Last but not least, Iago judges Othello and Emilia before procuring proper evidence.
The play begins with Iago and Rodrigo attempting to warn Brabantio that his daughter, Desdemona is marrying Othello. At first, Brabantio doesn’t accept it as true, after all, they have no proof, but once he finds his daughter’s bed empty, he goes to get justice. Later the duke …show more content…
Arise, arise; Awake the snorting citizens with the bell, or else the devil will make a grandsire of you: Arise, I say.” He has so much conviction that Iago told the truth, that he takes Othello to the Duke to have him punished. “When Brabantio asks the duke for redress, Othello vigorously defends his honor and reputation; he is seconded by Desdemona, who appears during the proceedings.” Brabantio has not seen anything with his own eyes, and is going off pure hearsay. After finally witnessing the truth from his own daughter, he turns to Othello and tells him “She has deceived her father, and may thee.” Foreshadowing the events to come. (Foster 1)
Oddly enough, in this scene, “[Desdemona] and Othello have no dialogue: he speaks to her once, briefly, toward the end; she never speaks to him.”. This is a brief show of miscommunication between the two of them, they do not speak considerable amounts throughout much of the play, apart from Othello’s jealous rages, and Desdemona’s protests.
