You are born with freedom, you can roam the streets freely but slaves could never walk off the land. Slaves were not treated the same as others some slaves didn't even get a chance to know what it's like to be free cause they sadly died. Most slaves didn’t know how to write or read or even speak to actually show how harsh slavery is.
To begin with, Fredrick Douglass was separated from his family and sold to an owner. When you are taken away at a young age you don’t necessarily know what is going on. Fredrick Douglass was young at the time we got taken away from his mother. It states " My mother was named Harriet Bailey she was the daughter of Isaac and Betsy Bailey.'' (chapter 1 paragraph 1) Fredrick only knew her name he does not know her
