Throughout history, management has always been among people in order to build the world we have today. Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling are the main functions and in fact, this can be found on every activity, either small or large. Management functions are carefully followed in order to achieve goals and make decisions. Even though it wasn’t clearly determined centuries ago, management followed the same principles as a way to organize and establish the first civilizations. The Egyptians and Sumerians were the firsts to take advantage of it, and over time management started developing in new fields thanks to philosophers and scientists whose thoughts determined the current management trends. One of them is Frederick Taylor, known as the father of scientific management, created the 4 Principles of Scientific Management in order to improve the output by training and specializing employees into different areas and tasks so that they could be more efficient as they work together. Other 2 important contributors to management are Frank and Lillian Gilbreth. They created the motion studies in which different tasks were separated into motions and the ones that are unnecessary or too repetitive were eliminated, with the aim to increase productivity, reduce the effort to perform a task and finally simplify work (Williams, Principles of Management). Moreover, Lillian Gilbreth developed her PhD in Industrial psychology in order to improve the working conditions which benefited the relations between employees and managers in terms of communication, job satisfaction, training and use of incentives. With the aim of establishing a task structure, Henry Gantt created the Gantt chart. This graphical chart helped organizations set tasks at certain times in order to achieve the best levels of performance, therefore a better output. Back home in Ecuador I used to work for a small company that manufactures table tennis tables, even though there were not many employees, this company has been leading the table tennis market in Ecuador for more than 20 years. Myself as a table tennis player, with a good knowledge in this area have learned a lot about the 4 functions of management, how important they are and how to approach them. My job at this company was an assistant in the area of sales and marketing, trying to make people aware about this brand and why they should acquire the product.
