South Korea, July 21st 1950. “I remember the climate of South Korea offset the recruits including me. It was difficult to get used to but we did.” said Frederick leier. Talking about the climate struggles many of soldiers felt when they went to Korea.North Korea and South Korea were at war for the boarders of the country. Frederick Leier (age:17) at the time was defending South Korea from the North Korean troops that entered their boundary lines at the 38th parallel. Many veterans who served have stories to tell. These stories are based on accounts and placement in the military as most are not the same. South Korea and North Korea were in the midst of their civil war or a war between regions in the same country. Leier fought in the ongoing …show more content…
Being in his late 60s he knew how most viewed veterans. The man saw his hat hat (Which said korean war veteran) and asked how he felt about his military experience. Frederick has never really been asked this so he went on a positive note of his experience. Asking whether if he liked it or not and if it was necessary. ”Yes” he said, “I felt it was necessary to support my growing country. I wanted to make the world a better place. Yes I liked it. I like helping my country in a time of need. I want my children to grow up in a world without war. It’s not fair for them if they come into a middle of a war between nations. They didn't bring this on themselves. I am very proud of my work in the military and so are most.” The man then turned around saying “thanks.” Walking away, the man had a sadden face as Frederick could assume the man felt bad for asking him. Frederick and his hat are to wings to a bird. Necessary to him. Frederick sounds a lot like Martin Luther King Jr. in the way speaks to people. He’s very supporting and acts a lot like MLK Jr. Leier often says “If you can dream it and want it, take the opportunity and make it happen.”Frederick Leier is 83 years old now and is retired`veteran of war. He is reminded daily that the wars are not over and that we the united states will keep fighting until the last

I wondered if he felt that he was important, but I didn’t have to wonder if he felt that other veterans were important. Any time he sees another soldier, it does not matter where we are, he will walk up and thank them for their service. He does this because he understands their importance and what it feels like to be unappreciated. When he returned from Vietnam, he was spit on and had things, such as glass bottles, thrown at him. Despite the things he and his unit did, like saving forty men from a POW camp, people still hated him.…

The small-town mentality of Norman’s hometown proves to be detrimental to his journey for healing, as he is shamed and ostracised for the way in which he served his country. Like many other middle-American towns, Norman’s home retains a strong sense of patriotism. From the white picket fences to the perfect ‘nuclear families,’ these civilians are proud of the image of their lives and country as a whole. Thus, these same civilians who fight for the victory of their country work to earn reputations as heroes, whose stories of bravery are to be revered throughout history. On the other hand, veterans are exiled and seemingly punished by this same society upon defeat, much like the veterans who saw America’s loss in the Vietnam War.…

The Korean division started the day the 38th parallel was settled on during the Potsdam Conference nearing the end of the Second World War. The 38th parallel was to serve as the dividing line of Korea, which was going to be occupied by the Soviet troops in the north and American troops in the south. Both international powers were set to help countries re-establish themselves in the world following WWII. The Americans vowed to help any country threatened by communism (Truman Doctorine, March 12th 1947). By the end of 1947 the US troops were prepared to leave South Korea and leave the country in hands of a pro-American conservative Dr. Syngman Rhee.…

I believe the person dictating the speech has proven a point when it comes to men giving themselves away in order to serve a wrong purpose, a wrong cause. Sometimes people get vulnerable and follow those whom seem powerful, demanding and/or controlling over others. Men give themselves to others whom disrespect them, take a hold of their lives, treat them as if they were dogs and consider them as objects in war instead humans. Men end up serving people who have hate in their hearts and end up doing wrongful things. These men don’t care about others but themselves.…

He is saying that the country’s population has collectively become “Prisoners of War” because of the impact that it had on, not only the military and soldiers, but also the entire nation. Even though it was not fought on our soil, it impacted an entire generation and its posterity. In the last two lines, “and at ourselves, those still alive, who stand before what might…

‘Only a solemn man’, there is no family, nor friends who care, which works in association with ‘he threw away his knees’ (l10). It degrades his decision to stupidity, presuming he went into something he knew he would come out of scarred. We know that he was misled, and did not know what he was getting into. The only person to come see him is a priest, (revealed by ‘inquired about his soul’), and to be cynical, we know he is there by duty to the dying.
