Frederick Funston was born September 11, 1865 in New Carlisle, Ohio. Funston was a General in the United States Army. General Funston and his family moved to Allen County, Kansas when his father was elected to the House of Representatives in 1881. In 1884 he tried to join the United States Military Academy, But failed the admissions test. He went to the University of Kansas from 1885 to 1888 but he did not graduate.Gen. Funston worked as a Trainman for the Santa Fe Railroad, then became a reporter in Kansas City, Missouri in 1890. He joined the Cuban revolutionary Army to fight of the Spanish, he caught malaria and was given leave of absence returned to the United States, where he was commissioned to a Colonel of the 20th Kansas Infantry.
