A young boy exposed to harsh conditions at only the age of 6. He’s never met his mother due to the fact that she was killed by her master and him and his father were purchased by a middle aged and very strict man. The boy and his father were forced to work 15 hours a day on the farm with only two meals a day if they were lucky. They were then beaten and whipped if they fell asleep during working hours or did not get enough work done in the eyes of their master. The boy had hundreds of lash marks on his body due to him being physically incapable of working such long hours. This was how slaves were treated, Frederick Douglass had a goal to abolish slavery. Being a slave himself made him experience the situation and realize he didn’t want future generations of African Americans to go through the injustice of being owned by people and treated like property and not human being (Autobiography -Frederick Douglass 2012). Frederick Douglass also was an activist for women’s rights. “The women who have thus far carried on this agitation have already embodied and illustrated Theodore Parker’s three grades of human greatness. The first is greatness in executive and administrative ability; second, greatness in the ability to organize; and, thirdly, in the ability to discover truth…” (Douglass). This quote was taken from Douglass’ speech on woman’s suffrage, it shows how he thought people no matter what their race or gender is, Douglass believed everyone should be treated equally.
Douglass was devoted to end slavery and work towards equal rights of all people. Frederick Douglass worked with President Lincoln to help start the emancipation of slaves across the country. He also used his stories and speeches that he wrote to persuade people to see his point of view and acknowledge that the treatment of slaves and inequality is wrong. After escaping slavery from his master, Frederick Douglass made sure to make the most of his life by enforcing human rights in an intelligent manner. America would not be what it is today without people, like Frederick Douglass to improve it
