For the victims, the effect is more of shifting to a negative mental mindset. They are more likely to develop thoughts of suicide, depression, and decrease in academic work. The Do Something Organization states that approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying (Association). Students should not be scared to go to school, they should be worried about a test or an assignment instead of worrying what another individual will do to them. It is a shame, that victims change their mental mindset based on people trying to define them as a person. In the book, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Mrs. Sophia Auld changes from a caring and generous to a cruel woman. “That cheerful eye, under the influence of slavery, soon became red with rage; that voice, made all of sweet accord, changed to one of harsh and horrid discord; and that angelic face gave place to that of a demon (Frederick 36).” Mrs. Auld is a victim because when Frederick met Auld; she was delightful but slavery turns her into this unpleasant human being. She wasn’t always cruel; she let slavery shape her into a hostile and cold-blooded …show more content…
The bully has obtained more social status than the victim, which makes it imbalance. “Over 67% of students believe that schools respond poorly to bullying, with a high percentage of students believing that adult help is infrequent and ineffective (Cohn).” School is supposed to be a safe environment for students to go to but it sounds like teachers can be part of the imbalance power along with the bully. If teachers are not addressing bullying then students are going to find a different way to deal with the bully; if it means not coming to school or just let it keep going on. Imbalance of powers is found in bullying and in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. In the book, Douglass talks about Aunt Hester and the night he experienced her getting whipped severely. Douglass states “Aunt Hester went out one night, -- where or for what I do not know, -- and happened to be absent when my master desired her presence.” Then he continues by explaining that she was caught with a young man that her master did not like and she was summoned to get whipped. By using this example, it shows that the master is the superior the bully and Aunt Hester is the victim. Yes, she broke the rules of going out but was it necessary to whip her with a heavy cow skin; causing her to drip blood all over the ground. When it comes imbalance of powers, there is no equal. It is either the good outweighs the bad or the bad outweighs the
