Douglass’ speech was a lot longer than Stanton’s, it took over an hour, while Stanton’s was merely two pages long. Douglass’ speech was a speech and that was it, while Stanton’s speech was a declaration and petition she wanted her listeners to sign. With Stanton’s speech being a declaration we are able to see how many people she reached with her speech, 100 people signed the petition. Everyone at the speech was able to sign it but over 200 people did not sign it. Now this is not saying that Stanton’s speech was not good enough for people to rally behind but it is showing how scared people were to publicly support something that goes against the social normalities even if it is something that person wants. Douglass’ speech did not have any petition to go with it but we do know he was talking to a group of white women and he was an african-american man. Now that would not matter in today’s society but back in 1852 that would of been very very rare for something like that to happen so Douglass had to show everyone that him an african-american man is able to speak clearly and sophisticated and not like an animal. Also Douglass’ speech was very rhetorical and in some part very heated and for him to speak that way would of been so unheard of that it would of taken people back and show people how important his topic
