Fred Gratzon: Progress In Society

Fred Gratzon stated “All progress in society, since the beginning of time, has been driven by lazy people looking to avoid work.” Many people believe that laziness hurts ourselves, but in reality Gratzon made a good point. Because of all the laziness that has occurred throughout the years, we have improved in things such as machinery. For example, in the beginning, farmers would go out in their fields and hand pick a crop one by one. Today they have tractors and other farming equipment that will harvest their crops for them. The farmers’ laziness resulted in speeding up the harvesting process. Laziness shouldn’t be looked at as only a negative trait; it can be considered positive too.
Although Fred Gratzon is right about the progression, laziness is also harming our population. One researcher has found that laziness causes as many deaths as smoking. That’s nearly six million deaths a year all because people have let their precious time go to waste. It gets to the point that people have to eventually do something about their wellbeing and try harder to achieve a health goal. Even if you just walk a mile with your dog everyday, that is doing something other than sitting all day. Walking can greatly decrease a person’s risk of obesity due to laziness. …show more content…
Different people will have different opinions of what this means to them. Depending on your energy levels, an inactive person may not be able to accomplish a higher goal as the active person. A person who enjoys most their time sitting on their couch would consider walking a mile an easily achievable goal, but a person that runs up to eight miles everyday would probably look down upon that other person’s one mile. Also a lazy person would consider thirty minutes at the gym a reasonable amount of time spent, while an active person would stay for almost two hours. We are similar to animals when it comes to each individual’s energy
