Everybody at one point has tough times, but it’s the best people that get you through it. Rodman Philbrick’s novel Freak the Mighty shares a realistic fiction story of two disabled friends who go on adventures and go through so many really tough situations. Leading to that, it’s a touching story about a beautiful friendship. I’ve learned that the best people can help you in life from this book.

Friends can sometimes save your life. They can help you through the toughest times, as shown in Freak the Mighty multiple times. For example, on page 134, Freak saves Max from almost being killed by his own father. Max is very thankful to have Freak as a friend. If Freak wasn’t aware of what was happening, Max would probably be injured or worse.

Freak and Max needed each other for that short period in their life. Stated from the text, on page 31, Freak made fun of Tony D and his gang by calling them “cretin” which stalled the gang from almost killing them. If Max were alone at that point, being as small inside as he is, it would not end well. Freak uses his smart ways and makes fun of them and that really helps to make more time for them to escape. Also, on page 81, Max states “If I don’t know, then Freak will tell me and he’ll say it in a way I can understand, which is a lot better than Mrs. Donelli can do.” That’s really nice of Kevin because Max has a learning disability and to do that is so generous. That gives the reader a look into how much a connection they have and how teamwork is needed in friendship. Life isn’t complete without a healthy friendship.

In conclusion, Freak the Mighty is a story about a close bond that’s unbreakable between two boys. Because of that bond, the reader really learns a lot about what it really is like to have a best friend and a good friend. So next time you are with a good friend of yours, think about what they do for you and how they help you. Friends are like four leaf clovers, they’re hard to find and you’re lucky to have them. Appreciate the small things in life, really think about what you should be lucky for. Freak the Mighty is truly one of the best books that showcases a friendship worth

I think that Max’s father’s reputation as a criminal will negatively affect him more often throughout the book. For instance, on pages three and four, Max’s grandparents refer to his father as “him” as if his name is dangerous, because of his dark past. Also, on page twenty, Gwen runs away in fear from Max, because he is incredibly large and the son of a killer, which is revealed on page thirty-nine. Stigmatized by pop culture and modern society, individuals suffering from physical disabilities are often labeled as abnormal. Katherine Dunn’s novel Geek Love challenges this stigma by creating a family comprised solely of “freaks” who display physical disabilities alienating them from the norms of society. To create this family of freaks, parents Al and Crystal Lil Binewski conceive their children while taking a concoction of narcotics—a practice frowned upon by society and medical experts alike due to the increased probability of birth defects. Abandoning their children who appear “normal,” the family raises those born with deformities as performers in their travelling carnival operation—the Binewski Fabulon. Star of the show Arturo Binewski, born with flippers rather than hands and feet, leverages his popularity as a performer in the Fabulon in order to gain power over his family and the audiences he generates.…

I think that The Mighty and Freak The Mighty had some differences but they also had some similarities. One of the similarities was that they both had the same characters, and one of the differences was that not all of the scenes were shown in the movie that was in the book. Also, there are some differences about how reading it than watching it like when you read the book it's a little bit more detailed and when you watch the movie they take out a lot of parts that are in the book. I'm going to talk about the scenes, in the movie it showed that Freak wanted to do gym and then the principal did not let Freak do gym but his mother convinced the principal to let Freak join the gym.
