Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick is about two boys named Max and Kevin who lives next door to each other and become best friends. Max, who lives with his grandparents, Grim and Gram, has a learning disability. Kevin who lives with his mother, "The Fair Gwen of Air" has a physical disability. A new neighbor moves to the neighborhood. It was a boy named Kevin and his mother Gwen. He calls her “The Fair Gwen of Air”. Kevin is Max’s tutor at school. Kevin is a very smart boy and teaches Max about king Arthur and his Knights. He especially teaches him how to read. Max begins to carry Kevin on his shoulders at the Fireworks celebration, where they also bump into a gang lead by a juvenile delinquent named Tony D. Kevin is sometimes hospitalized because of his illness Morquio's Syndrome. Kevin and Max go on one of their quests where Kevin tells Max he is being fitted for a bionic body, because his organs are getting to big for his body. Kevin says he found treasure and Max and himself go on a quest to find it. It is a purse that belonged to Loretta Lee. They go to her house in the new tenements, an old run down town. They return it to her. She says she recognizes him and soon figures out that he is Killer Kanes son. Her boyfriend comes out and tells them to leave because he didn’t want killer kane to know that they were messing with his son. Kevin and Max got to school the next day and the school principal calls Max down. She tells him that Killer Kane is being reached on parole and want to see him. He Freaks out. Max goes back and has lunch with Kevin. Kevin eats too quickly and chokes on American chop suey. He is rushed to the hospital and hospitalized for about a week. After, comes back from the hospital and celebrates christmas eve with everyone. When Max is trying to go to sleep, a hand covers his mouth and he realizes it's Killer
