In the book Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick Max and Freak become good friends even know they had some issues in the past They have tons of confusion and aggression as a rebel named Tony D. stepped in their path. Tony D. called them freaks and ordered to have a talk with them. This shows that Tony wants to bully a self centered Max and a different Freak over their looks and actions. This is because Tony chose a life on the run from adults and cops for he harassed children and fellow teenagers along the way. Max has a mood of laughter and confusion as Freak calls Tony a Cretin meaning one who suffers from mental deficiency.
