As a method of coping, humans seek out the attention of others and look to them for support. Maia Szalavitz, a journalist for TIME.com writes “the more connections we have and the stronger our bonds are to each other, the more likely we are to survive, not just physically but emotionally”. Hardships become easier to endure when connecting with people or groups who have experienced similar emotions. As mentioned previously, Cormac McCarthy admirably grasped this concept in his novel The Road when he introduced father and son into a harsh dystopian atmosphere. Early on it is evident that these characters cannot survive without each other: Cameron 2…

Mrs. Bigio’s feelings toward the girl changed, when she saw other kids teasing Mai Thi because of where she was from. I think that this change was because Mrs Bigio probably felt a surge of giult and horror rushing through her when she realized how cruel she was being when she saw others being mean, and saw how much it hurt the girl. In the end of the chapter Mai Thi and Mrs. Bigio were comforted by each…

Instead of accepting the fact that Finny was simply a better human and leaning his focus onto self-improvement, he concluded that Finny must be jealous too. Gene wanted to excel at something related to how Finny had exceeded. Wistfully Gene’s plan later resulted in Phineas’ death; therefore, he clearly did not deal with his conflict in an appropriate way, but Finny’s death did end Gene’s war.…

Throughout the novel “The Sun Also Rises,” by Ernest Hemingway, the characters are often represented as “lost” both mentally and physically, in negative and positive ways. This is evident when Brett announces, “I won’t be one of those bitches,” exclaiming that she is finally coming to realize who she wants to be and what she wants from a man(247). This is negative because she was “lost” and was abusing her self-worth proving that she was physically misusing her body, but mentally she thought she was smart enough to not be “one of those bitches.” The main character Jake however, was “lost” in a positive way as he thinks to himself, “It felt strange to be in France again. There was a safe, suburban feeling,” explaining that Jake felt comfort…

I am only ashamed of myself for having at one time been ashamed.” This quote epitomized the whole short story for me.…

A stranger is defined as someone who doesn’t know or not known in a particular place. In the movie, Edward Scissorhands by Tim Burton, the main character, Edward is viewed as a stranger amongst the 1950’s conventional town. Edward stands out due to the setting the town creates. It’s your typical suburbia, houses all in pastel colors exactly the same as one another, the men all leave and come home at the same time as each other in a car the same color as their house. Burton tried to express a neighborhood that embodied the typical issues surrounding 1950’s suburbia.…
