Fraud and dishonesty are both issues that are inevitably faced in jobs and workplaces every day all throughout the world. These two issues are not to be taken lightly and should be taken care of immediately when there are any occurrences. Fraud and dishonesty can be present in any workplace no matter what the field. When it comes to the field of Community Health and Public Health, there are many instances in which fraud and dishonesty can play a role within the workplace. One of the biggest areas of Community and Public health in which fraud and dishonesty occur is in health care, ranging from doctors and patients, to pharmaceutical companies. I have read articles about this topic as well as seen examples of this in the news. One example of this, as stated in an article from Forbes, is an incident that occurred in China where “Chinese authorities were investigating pharmaceutical companies like GlaxoSmithKline for example, because they bribed doctors, hospitals and government officials to buy & prescribe their drugs to patients” (Kelton). “Glaxo is accused of using a Shanghai travel agency to funnel at least $489 million in bribes” (Kelton). Larger companies like GlaxoSmithKline sometimes try to overuse their power and commit fraud in order to benefit themselves even if they are not doing things by the book. A way to prohibit these issues from occurring is to keep these larger companies in check and make sure they do not try to use their power to bribe smaller health care providers like doctors and hospitals.
Dishonesty and fraud occur daily within the field of health care and every field of work. By all means, one should always aim to do everything legally and avoid any instances of fraud or dishonesty. If fraud is committed, actions should be taken immediately. If committing fraud and dishonesty can be avoided by everyone, workplaces can become a better place where employees can feel safe and comfortable in their work
