Liszt was born in Raiding, Austria on October 22, 1811 to Adam Liszt and Anna Lager. Liszt’s aptitude toward music was recognized early on by his father, who was his first piano teacher. His father exposed the young Liszt to music by taking him to concerts. It was around the age of six he started piano lessons with his father. At age nine, Liszt made his first public appearance as a performer, playing a concerto by Ries. Several noblemen of the region took notice to Liszt and offered to pay for musical studies in Vienna. These advancements allowed for wider ranges of sound, a factor Liszt took advantage of in his compositions. He employed wide leaps, dynamic phrasing, and alluring textures. The technique he developed because of these advancements was astounding. His technique was new and exciting, and had an impact on other composers such as Busoni, who had great admiration for Liszt.
